I really like the NT blackheaded python and the high yellow and black jungle pythons, this isn't a snake i will be purchasing soon, it won't be for a year or two atleast. my question is which type would people generally recommend for my situation.

Looks wise i like both of these snakes very much. i want more of a display snake rather then a handler but saying that i still have to be able to handle it some what for cleaning and i do remove my spotted and stimson for feeding.

i am very new at this hobby but try to research things well before i decide on something.

does one require a more experienced owner then the other??

any pro or cons people have come across who have owned both would be great :)

generally blackheaded pythons are a hardier snake then a jungle! Some people say that they are fiesty but i find it all display and i havent seen a blackhead bit yet! (this is only me). I like jungles! And i havent had a bad jungle yet! Although they can be difficult feeders! Although jungles do tend to show themselves off more then blackheads! So pritty much jungles can be abit harder to keep! although i havent had any problems! And blackheads are a hardier snake! But really as most people will say it is up to you!

I have a Jungle python and it doesnt demand to much of my time. This is the second jungle i have had and both have been easy to feed. I personally like jungles better than BHPs but that comes down to personal preference
. Just remember with jungles there are lot of patterns etc that you can choose from and work with for breeding should you decide to breed later on down the track.
If you like black and yellow pythons, make sure to look at some high yellow diamonds. The right high yellow diamond python can be stunning as well.

Yah hard one. I did a jungle thread to get advise a while ago. In the end i got me a BHP. My reason i love BHP they so placid. My baby pretends hes feirce at times but he just kinda bumps me doesnt ever bite. Id go BHP for temperment. I recon a jungle would be a great display they are the "supermodels" of snakes. The BHP is a ground dweller compared to the hanging jungle.

Both snakes as stunning as adults. BHP will get VERY Large!!!!! Go have a look at other peoples snakes if you can and decide for yourself its a hard decision. Oh yah i did get a BHP but The Jungle is coming :p

get one of each.there are plenty of local(CQ) breeders around. come to the QLD reptile expo on the 18th of april and check some out.you wont be disapointed.
cheers

I recommend a jungle python for a display snake , When a Bhp that reaches 8 plus feet
with a strong food respose jump out at you , You better have a bit of experiance behind you
cheers

Also remember jungles are more arboreal while BHPs are more terrestrial, so enclosure size will have to accommodate that.

two things to think about I gess. You say you want a display animal. A BHP will need a long enclosure but not tall. The Jungle will need an arboreal enclosure. the BHP is sest up in a natural environment will have a dry scene yet the Jungle will have a rainforest scene. Which one of these suites your room better?

Also, if you intend breeding then Jungles will be easier as they are not natural reptile eaters so easier to get to eat mice.

I would have to say a jungle, I'm very biased but hear me out.

For a display snake jungles are by far the prettiest, A little bitey when young, but calm down.
They're small (so I'm guessing that means doesnt take up as much space), and they're super fun to watch!!!:D

mmm i think the bit of extra length on the BHP would be my down fall and it being more ground dwelling, i do love the rainforrest look of an enclosure as well. it would be nice to have an enclosure with height, as it is going to be a focal point in our lounge room. it is a hard choice though i see why people end up with both lol

You just made your decision

if it is going to be out in your main living room you wouldn't want a cranky jungle because it would stress it out a lot and may strike at the glass etc if you get a psycho.....they are both great snakes and a nice bright jungle looks great but a decent sized bhp is also a very impressive snake.

got both aswell, unfortunatly i dont have time to clean out a display enclousure etc so there all just on newspaper etc.

both my bhp and all my jungles are all very active snakes, the jungles are more inclined to perch up and relax, unless in hunting mode.

one thing i would take into considering is the materials you will need to make the display enclousure, with a jungle you could get some fake vines and plants and have him/her on aspen bedding and it would look quite nice and fairly easy to clean.

as Peter said a bhp would need a dry scene, so im assuming sand etc is what you would aim for? imagine cleaning out a 1200 x 600 x 600 enclousure filled with sand... i get frustrated dealing with sand all over the floor just from the small levis levis tubs, probably not something you want in your living room.

another thing i have noticed is my bhp is alot more messy then any of my jungles.. something to take into consideration if its going to be a lounge room display.

just my opinion

Thats what happens when animals crap on the floor and slither/walk through it. Hence why I also recommend beardies over blueys.

As for animals pooing in the enclosure i take mine for walkies on the lawn a few days after a feed. Took a few goes but now they are toilet trained and no more mess!!! :)

at the moment for my other two snakes for bedding i use a reptile friendly cat litter (recycled paper) as it seems to absorb any smell from poo's and always the enclosure smells fresh and is easy to scoop any poo out and into the bin. it's dark grey it doesn't look very natural but it blends because of all the plants and vines in the current enclosures. could a jungle still have this on the floor of it's enclosure??????? the attachment is of my spotted on his vine basking under his light but this is the sort of display i always seem to prefer the look of

BHP, BHP, BHP, BHP...they are an awsome hardy snake. check out my girl in my albums (hit the 'show all albums, as its hidden), she is a little over 7ft now and great to handle, I can grab her and kiss her on the head, she never cares when you walk past her enclosure, I will post some better pics soon, also her enclosure is there to, its a little dodgy on the angle the way the photo was take, the bed was in the way, but its a over 6ft long. i guess you would need the room to put in in the lounge area.
