Picked up my first snake today! he's a 10month old murray darling carpet i got from pails for scales in ballarat. I put him in a click clack in his bigger enclosure without the lid and within 10mins he was out exploring it :). There is plenty of little hides all over the place for him to be secure aswell. Ive got a basking area at about 31-32deg via a 75watt infared. i would be using smaller but the cage is 2.5ft high so its getting good temps. around the bottom of the cage in the hot end its about 28 or so and about 25 in the centre of the enclosure. 20-21 at the cold end. this sound good ?

temps sound ok. you may want to worm your snake. its usally a good idea to worm new snakes when you get them

it sounds good to me, as long as it has plenty of hides at both ends. make sure it can't get out through the gap in the sliding doors. leave it for a week and see how you go feeding it then. post some pics when you can.

yep ive already put a piece of brush stuff inbetween the glass gap :). Its in their real tight so it aint going anywhere! once ive given it a feed il chuck some pics up.
cheers

enclosure is 5ft long. 2.5ft high and 2 wide. heres some pics. ive got 5 hides in there. before i get flamed for it being so big. i am leaving the click clack in so it has the choice if being in either

if it starts feeding well it should be fine, see how it goes you can always put it back in the tub. you might want to put some smaller hides in for it though, light globe boxes work well.

yeah will do its got 2 small ones, but more won't hurt. funny thing is he's actually in the big one in the corner at the cold end which i didnt expect hah! thanks for the help. if he doesnt feed well ill be sure to move him straight back. Do you generally leave roughly a week or so before handling?

Giving any animal worming tablets, gel etc could do it more harm than good, why worm the snake when it might not even have worms.Do you use panodols before you get a headache,Using any medications without knowing if the snake etc needs it will more than likely do more harm..IMO i would rethink if this is what you do with any new reptiles entering your place...MARK

yea give it bout a week to get used to it's new surroundings before u handle it ... do the same for feeding too ....

Leave it for a week with NO handling, then offer a feed.If it takes the food item give it atleast 2 days to digest before you attempt to handle it.
If it doesnt take the food item leave it in over night,if its still there in the morning remove it and throw it away. Then again, give it a full week with ZERO handling and attempt to offer food item again.

bit of an update. turned the fluro off as soon as it was dark outside and about half an hour later he was out and about. cutting laps of his new environment climbing everything possible ! he's now enjoying a nice bask on his log...I couldnt be happier!

it may not have worms, but then again it could have. if you remember a while back there was a couple of threads about snakes bought with worms. one of these snakes died and was replaced with another snake that also had worms. without saying to much, it could just be the same shop where the snake that this thread is about was bought from.if the directions for worming are followed i dont see there being a risk. just as following the directions for taking panadol hasnt harmed me as yet. cheers wayne

Good on ya blakehose, Good to see you have done some reasearch and are cluey. One of the hardest things to do is not handle a new herp, so good on ya!. Click clacks are a personal choice, however it does also depend on the snake. My hatchie LOVED the big enclosure from day one. So what ever works for it really...

that sound like it's settlng in well :D:D:D

for worming is it just a simple trip to the vet?

call your local vet and ask if you can bring a sample to them to test, I'm with pythons73 on this, worm medication shouldn't be given if it doesn't have worms
there is a list of vets in wiki above that deal with reptiles
