If the soil from your garden is sifted through, had all rocks/roots removed, then left out in full sun/ placed in oven to cook all pests, could it be used for pets, like the sand from the pet stores?
Or is there still something not right with it?

cheers mike

Imuo it would be fine if you have prepared it like you described..personally..just go by some "fine sand" from your garden store if you really want sand as a substrate.
cheers, mick. 8)

I have always used wild dirt. I also use wild leaves and branches too. My reptiles live life on the edge

We have geckos, and I wouldn't take the chance. The red desert sand is expensive, but still better than dead or sick geckos.

I did read the article in the latest Scales & Tails magazine that Ryan Ernesti wrote about his gecko breeding and he uses 'pavers sand'.
I plan to check this out and see if I can get it and how much cheaper it is.

'pavers sand'.
if you got to a nursery or an asphalt/concrete plant.lol..there is washed sand, course sand, fine sand etc..pavers is "fine sand" if that helps..btw thats not you spell course sand but it wont let me lol  so u can assume the spelling.

Desert sand is only good for the red colour imo, but personally I would never waste my money on it.
What I use for my dragons is "Play sand" from Bunnings (basically just sterilized sand) its only about $10 for 20kg.
For my geckos I use coco peat for some and a coco peat and play sand mixture for other depending on the species requirements.
For desert species such as Nephurus levis levis I would use play sand on its own.

Thanks Gex

I used leaflitter in my Frog tank, if they can take that and be safe im sure a lizzie can have dirt, soil, rocks, branches.etc

i use this snake bedin ( like sardust ) for one of my marbled geckos tank and sand for the other, also i use fake grass for my blueys

This is true.. god doesnt F10 everything ;)

Just as a thought God didn't place reptiles in tiny unnatural boxes either. Personally I'm not for or against but for my own reptiles, snakes - newspaper, Bobtails - breeders choice

Hahaha, my lizards got ticks and mites from one week of edge living from what looked like clean branches and leaves, do yours ever get anything?

Never had a problem with any of my reptiles. Ticks and mites can be removed by leaving the stuff submerged in water before using it.

Only problem i have ever had related to this sort of thing was leaches getting into my frog tank, im pretty sure one (or more) hitched a ride on the aquatic plants.
