I'm currently treating a central netted dragon for a possible mouth infection with chlorhexidine applied topically. I want to swap from a mouth wash which contains 0.1% chlorhexidine when diluted to a product called Aviclens Water Cleanser.
The bottle says it contains chlorhexidine 10mg/mL.
I'm trying to figure out the ratio when added to water to get a 0.1% solution.
My brain's mush when it comes to maths!:?

Thanks,
Vikki

Hi

Firstly I would like to say that my maths is really bad so please check my figures......

Aviclens is already highly diluted and not what I have been recommended but here goes.

Aviclens contains 10mg/ml, so a 100ml bottle should contain 1 gram of chlohex (100ml x 10mg equals 1000mg (1 gram)). So the bottle has 1 g/100ml which equates to 0.01%. So if you want a 0.1% you need to make the solution stronger not weaker.

To treat stomatis I use a 1:100 solution (0.01) so if I were to use aviclens I would not dilute at all. The solution you are trying to achieve is 10 times stronger (10:100). I would suggest checking first with your vet to make sure you have the correct intended ratio as I have always been told to use a 1:100 ratio. Also if using chlorhex, keep it away from UV light.

Concentrated chlorhexadine should be diluted at 1:100 - that means 1 ml of chlorhex to 100ml water.

.For simplicity assume 1 ml weighs 1 gram ( you are comparing weight with volume). There are a thousand mg in a gram, You have 10 mg per ml which is 10/1000 gram per ml. You want 0.1% = 1/10 x 1/100 =1/1000 gram per ml . I would dilute it 10 to 1.

ok. thanks for your replies. Is there something else i can buy which is more suitable? I'm not happy using the mouthwash that was recommended by the vet because the alcohol content and mint flavour seems to have put Crusty off his food. He is very skinny and i want him to put on some weight pretty quickly. I'm just dabbing the solution on his lips a couple of times a day. Any further advice welcomed!

This is a pic of poor Crusty. I didn't want to leave him behind when i bought his 4 brothers last week.
I was told he eats well and has always had a deformed mouth but I wasn't convinced and took all 5 for a vet check. Some of the others are a little under weight but this one is my main concern right now.

whoops, just noticed my decimal place is wrong (could never figure those pesky things out). The ratios are correct though 1:100 (go off wokkas maths he got it right). Just get some chlorhex from your vet as it is cheaper than aviclens and will go a lot further.

Thanks I'll do that today. I couldn't get back to the vet yesterday (I don't think a lizard with Gingivitis counts as an emergency) and the chemist said it doesn't come in a bottle undiluted!
