Hey all,
I had the misfortune today to see on Facebook somebody who goes to my school (I need to stress, Facebook friends and REAL friends are polar in similarity) posted a picture of this poor bugger.
Unfortunately, it was basking outside of his room, and so he took the liberty of beheading it.
Suffice it to say, I belittled him over the internet (now I'm a real man! :p). Hopefully, he'll think twice next time...
Anyway, I was wondering if someone could tell me what it is :)
I know it's hard to tell, with the head over turned, but, hopefully the body will make-do.
I was thinking an Eastern Brown Snake, or an Eastern Tiger Snake (slight banding mid-body...)?
But, if anyone could I.D it for me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Oh also, he lives in/around Cessnock, if that helps with the locality.
Cheers,
Ben.

What and he posted it on facebook thinking he's some kind of hero? Some people.....

some people are just cruel i live on a decent size block with heaps of stuff (my parents hoard alot and dont know the meaning of get rid of) and i have a heap of red bellies in my yard but i love them being there never have a mice problem (also live near a creek and neighbors have horses) and im sure its thanks to them. people need to be educated instead of this "the only good snake is a dead snake" bull***t people go on with they were here first

I'd do the same to a kitten if it was sunning itself outside my room, just call me cautious.
Oh come on, you cat people are over the top sometimes. I have kids to think about and pets and cats, well, if there is one there is usually a nest isn't there.
Ignorance will win out nearly every time.

Oh okay, so it is an Eastern Brown after all.
Yeah, there's a second picture he uploaded of him holding the headless snake...
It's almost the length of his body... It's such a shame.

It's a funny thing i would pay money to see this animal in a zoo, being that i live in the states and he has the good fortune to have them right outside his door and chooses to kill them instead! People often justify killing venomous snakes because they pose a danger even though this very action is statistically responsible for a good portion of venomous snake bites recorded every year!

We can hope that the rodents around cessnock make it to this guys house and chew up his computer ha ha ha
Just call a catcher poor snake nice looking textilis

Dead one..Eastern brown..hope the snakes relos goes and pay him a visit..

While this killing will probably causes their extintion in some peoples minds, someone getting bitten would be a far worse scenario for the image of snakes. Relocating a snake is virtually the same as killing it, the main differance being if you relocate a snake is that it can kill native fauna in a differant area or bite someone else.

Peter, cats do transmit diseases that are probably similar to snake bite harm. The thing is you need to kill every roaming cat to minimise the harm, snakes should only be killed if they are in an area where they are likely to harm people.

It is illegal to kill Australian snakes and there is never a time or a scenario when a snake needs to be killed. No snake ever needs to be killed. If there is a snake in a persons home then safely transporting it to some nearby bushland is the best thing for the snake and for the house owner. if you have bush surrounding your home and you see a snake in your yard then the best option is to simply leave the snake alone. Provention is always better than cure however so finding out why the snake is there and taking away the things that attract the snake to your yard in the first place is the best option. Clean up your yard and mow the lawn regularly as well as keeping averies and chook pens cleaned out will dramatically decrease your chances of having a problem with snakes taking up residence in your property.
Killing snakes is never the answer.

It is illegal. All australian native wildlife is protected under law. The only time you are legally allowed to kill a native snake is when it is posing threat to you or your pets. That is my understanding of the law anyway

id agree with the above about.

as for the guy who said never a time to kill a snake i would mostly agree with this but i saw a time when the little kid next door ( about 1yr old) was in the back yard with his dad and he cralwd into a play tunnel ( kind of like thoes things for the dog) and a tiger came in the other end. the only two things that could happen was the dad kill it or the kid get bitten. the tunnel was about 3M long so he couldnt grab the kid out nore the snake out.

since then the kids aint allowd to play in anything longer then half an arms length :p

It is illegal to kill a snake in every part of Australia, unless the snake poses an immediate danger to life...... be that yourself, another person or a pet!

i was a snake catcher for many years and still do alot of calls in the area...

truth of the matter... and it took me many years to learn this...

a dead snake is better than a dead child..

everytime i used to get a call out and they had already killed the snake i would near punch the person..
i used to get angry and was genuinly very upset..

but truth is.... as a parent, you take NO chances...
I know some idiots kill them for no reason, and some kill harmless snakes due to lack of education in their behalf..

but as a parent, they think Kill... Just in case..

and as stated..
as much as i could never harm a snake...

some parents arnt willing to take any risks when it comes to their family..

All Reptiles in Australia are protected species therefor killing them is an offense. Unless you happen to be aboriginal in which case you are exempt for cultural reasons.
