What is the difference between these pythons? Liasis mackloti in "A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia" is said to occur on Sunda Is. in Indonesia (or something). If this species occurs in Indonesia... Why is it in the Reptiles of Australia book? And I assume then, that the water pythons we can own here are Liasis fuscus? Thanks!

Athough some Authors do not distinguish those 2 python species, some other do and according to me are right. There are 2 local forms of Liasis fuscus: PNG (small) and Australian one (big), not taxonomically parted. Liasis mackloti is a PGN python with 3 different recognized subspecies: L.m.dunni (Wetar freckled python), L.m.savuensis (Savu Island freckled python) and the nominal one (freckled python) with a LOT of different known localities.
Hope it helps
Stef
