I own a Diamond Python, i built it a new indoor enclosure, and bought lights. i used to keep the diamond in an outdoor enclosure.
the new enclosure has plenty of ventilation, lighting and hot and cool spots.
the lights in the enclosure only offer UVA but not UVB, so i have been putting the snake back in the outdoor enclosure for about 2 hours though the day when the suns out, so he'll gain his UVB requirements.
how long would it take my Diamond Python to gain his UVB requirements for the day?
is 2 hours to long or not enough?

Attached is a pic of the new enclosure.
i built it out of a old cabinet, and only spent $12.50 on it.
give me your opinion on the enclosure, and how i could make it better.

Cheers! :)

cant answer ur UV question, but are they screws sticking thru the back wall?

if so ur snake could damage itself on them,...

Holbs please get the snake out of there and into a safe enclosure.
$12.50 to make the enclosure - what's the snake worth to you?

Dont worry they are not screws they are holes, the enclosure has no sharp bits for the snake to hurt itself on.

Yer $12:50 aint alot i know that, but the enclosure defently is safe, i would never put my snake in a dangerous enclosure! and wouldnt put a price on my Pet!

Ok file the edges off the holes and the screw holes, the log looks like it might be able to get pulled off there by the snake and it could get hurt or killed (has happen on here more then once)
Apart from that if your happy with it then it looks ok to me.
Keep the flouro on half the day and take the snake out side twice a week to get full sun( UVs)

I've been told diamonds don't require UV lights. minium 1 hour a week in sunshine is as much as they need and cheaper.

no offence mate, but i would be buying a properly made enclosure. yours only spells out disaster to me....

I use a UVA and UVB light globe in my enclosure and have it on a timer for 14 hours a day. I have used this method for 5 years now and it seems to work just fine.

File the edges on the holes a bit, and just secure the log a little more and its a damn good set up for $12.50 lol. But honestly they live in the wild, the deal with branches and logs and unstable natural things ALL the time. I dont think its anything to be SUPER STRESSED about, but fix it up, just incase. I agee with Auzlizardking with the UV requirements!

actualy quite a few people have lost there snakes due to loose branches that have fallen and killed the snake.

THE ENCLOSURE IS SAFE!!!! and yer it looks ratty, but i dont think the snake is worried about his "standard" of living. Aslong as he is happy and healthy living in it, which he is!

thanks, yer i'll go over the edges. ive seen him climb on the log plenty of times and it hasnt budged but i'll check it over and fix any prob i can.

and thanks for the UVB info. :)

Depending on where you live it might be better to just leave your diamond living in the outdoor enclosure.
As for providing UV indoors my opinion is that it isn't needed. Like it has been said above, you're better off just taking it outside for some sun whenever you can :)

replyin to melgalea
quite a few snakes may have died from falling branches.
but this is not going to happen, because he's been on the log plenty of times and it hasnt moved, and the log is nowhere near heavy enough to hurt or KILL the snake! if it fell. and it aint moving!

and i agree with sxc_celly, snakes are wild animals! its not like u can wrap your snake in bubble wrap!! and their excellent climbers!!

The jury is still out on whether Diamond's need UVB. It is believed by some that it is needed and not supplying it can result in Diamond Python Syndrome. Others believe that DPS is more related to them being kept at temps that are to warm and more appropriate to other pythons. Some others believe that it could well be a combination of both.
Personally I would err on the side of caution and try to cover both. A couple of hours a week should be enough to fulfill it's UV requirements but just make sure that the temps in the enclosure are also appropriate.

thanks buck.
yer im trying to keep on top of all that ive been hearing about DPS, ecspecially when my diamond has recently hit maturity, which apparently is most common in Diamonds that age.

Was thinking the same thing, leave it outside!!
Personally we don't use uv on ours (hopefully they will be outside soon).

The others weren't knocking you over the logs just offering some advice (which you asked for):)
It wouldn't hurt to tidy up the holes and secure the logs a bit more.I would get rid of the sharp nails too (although crucifixions are for easter, snakes can't be reserected :) ) and perhaps get a light cover so he doesn't burn himself.Jmo.

I think if you think that the tank is safe for your pet than that is the only thought that matters- plus you should know if it is your pet. You have made sure about ventilation and temperatures and that there is nothing to hurt your snake than it should be fine. Plus you dont always need to spend millions of dollars to get the best equipment. I mean my snake doesnt care if his tank has all the bling! (even though he is very spoilt) Whose snake cares for bling? They only care for a feed and warmth!

Oh yes the light should have a cage, fried snake anyone? Heard it tastes like chicken

this is only MY OPINION...
BUT... if you cant afford to get your snake or any other reptile an appropriate enclosure then you shouldnt be keeping reptiles. this is NOT directed at anybody.
none of my reptiles have so called BLING, however .. i have spent alot of money in the upkeep of ther enclosures to makes sure they are of the safest standards.......

:x :( Mate you said give me a opinion and i think it looks as rough as guts . Make sure that the holes are all sandpaper off and no rough spots maybe spend another 50 cents ,and make it 13.00$ even. 50.cents for the sand paper but thats my opinion, and you wanted one .I can,t build mine so i buy them more for the snakes safety because i can,t build a cage that is safe
