I have been back in Australia for less than 48 hours and I discover that I have what appears to be mites on my snake cage, so they will be on my snake and 2 juvi lizards
Heres a pic taken of a suspected mite through a 100X microscope (on 400X I have determined this specimen to be dead) Sorry about the haziness.

I have been away for the past 3 months and left my reptiles in my family's care. They purchased this two leveled reptile bank and a 5ft fish tank which sits on top, about 8 weeks ago, and my snake has been living in the top level ever since. Apparently her last shed several weeks ago came out in several pieces (their description was etchy at best) which they put down to the "rough" new logs. Apparently she is also passing waste frequently (something every few days, whereas around once a week prior to my departure). She is been taken out in the sun every few days for some UV, but does not have a UV light as such and her heat mat is not on a timer ( Ive been told it will not exceed 35 degrees C as if it makes a difference. :? ). I have only located the one mite suspect so far (but where theres one theres many apparently) and have not found any on my snake as such, but I only discovered the first 1 less than 2 hours ago. I have checked in her water bowl and have seen several small brown specs on the bottom, but she has a large branch above the water she likes to climb on and prior to my departure she would occasionally knock a small piece of bark off from time to time. My snake cage is in my room along with this computer and several large cupboards/drawers (which will make the eradication even more difficult). My family owns three adult "house cats" which have access to all rooms (even mine, despite my disapproval and their fear of my snake) and one of which sleeps on a mesh-lidded lizard enclosure, so I am unaware of whether cats can carry mites on them and continue to pass them around.
If anyone has any personal stories on mites, can verify my picture, or has any other information for me about eradicating them if they turn out to be mites (I am unfortunately positive they are) as any further (I have looked these up and read the previous posts) information would be much appreciated. At this point in time I am thinking of using the "mite eaters" (I am incredibly tired and cannot remember the name at this point in time) people have mentione in the past and if someone knows of any other stories about these or locations I can order them from in Australia It would also be helpful.
Can cats carry mites from different locations? Can mites live in drawers, cupboards, clothes that have not come in contact with reptiles?
As I mentioned before, I have been back in Oz for less than 48 hours and am still suffering jet lag. This is an incredibly unpleasant welcome home gift and I frankly have a million other things that I would have preferred to be doing upon my return, but I will be preoccupied with mite eradication. I have no idea how long theyve been here and I do not know if im dealing with the first generation or several generations.

Cheers, Jay

She does not appear to have any signs of mites on her (eyes arent sunken looking, no noticeable spots on her light underbelly) and she does not appear to be interested in her water bowl for soaking (though she has never been one for much soaking or drinking really).

Cheers, Jay

if they are mites i would surgest using orangemedic. this is an old head lice treatment. clean out the cages with this and clean your animals with it. it worked with me!

Be carefull with that stuff......
last resort in my books, cos it'll take the skin of with the mites too :)
Try Top Of Descent - lots of ppl can vouch for that product here

I use orange medic to clean out her cage. Any idea whats a good ratio for washing her in is, and im guessing luke warm water? Ive never had to clean a herp before so Im a little worried about hurting her.

Cheers, Jay

I'd be steering waaay clear of orange medic. I've heard far too many reports of poisoned reptiles. In any event .. the ratio I have heard is a dilution of 2 parts Orange medic to 10 parts water (cotton bud around the eye), at your own risk. Make sure you thoroughly wash the snake off after application/s.
T.O.D is the safest way to go.

ive had mites twice since keeping reptiles and used orange medic on both occasions without any dramas, all i did was soak the snakes for about 15 mins in a 1 part orange medic to 15 parts water and when ya get em out viola no mites......cleaned the cages with a solution about 2-3 parts orange medic 10 parts water ......worked first time for me though i did repeat the process just to be sure, just dont use Orange Medic PLUS....its the bad stuff

Cheers
Steve

Just for more information. How exactly you use Top Of Descent ? Do you spray it to cage?

Slatey, after removing the water dish, TOD is sprayed directly into the enclosure, enough to create a decent mist affect. Snakes aren't bothered by it. Once the mist has settled (about 5 - 10 mins) just an air out will do it. If a snake is heavily infested, another method is placing the animal into a moist pillow case and spraying the interior and leaving snaky be for about 15 mins.

Thank You varanus. I am thinking to fumigate my new 2 snakes with it. Just in case.

Asbestos was always ok too.
Fumagate....bit of a worry.
For what it is worth, i used hypoaspis mites to eat the reptile mites, worked fine ..... no more mitteyys
jeeez tooo many beers .... and its only ......what day is it?

I have a 5ft fish tank on top of her cage, would T.O.D. affect them?

Cheers, Jay

If the tanks is on top its ok, spray wont go up, unless you point it upward outside the snake enclosure. spread a sheet over it if ya worried.

IF you can't avoid spraying and if you are worried about the fish tank then move the air pumps outside (use long air hose) and cover the tank with gladwrap to create positive pressure. Do the spray and once the residues have settled do a major water change and repeat water change in two days.

I have a feeling you may be panicing at the moment, mites tend to be in large numbers before they are noticed. Observe for a couple of days

Maggie, I have sprayed my whole room excessively with TOD and right bang in the middle of the room is a tank with around 50 tanganyikans in it. I have never lost a fish so I guess I was extremely lucky? How did you find out it's toxic to fish?
