I ordered a copy of snake bitten the other day, looking forward to reading it. I dont read books all that often as I dont really read fiction books.

I can recommend reading the biography on Nancy Wake by Peter Fitzsimons, its a good read about an amazing woman.

Anything Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Irvin D. Yalom (combines psychotherapy and philosophy).
A fair bit of Philosophy -- Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, John Stuart Mill..

So basically science, psychology, philosophy, ethics, as well as tech books (programming, algorithmics, etc).
I must say, I'm not really much of a fan of fiction.

Edit: I left out a couple people have mentioned...

A Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.. Also, Kurt Vonnegut.

Wow some awesome taste here :p

For any Star Wars fans Darth Bane: Path of Destruction by Drew Karpyshyn is the best Star Wars (and probably SciFi) book I've ever read.
Old Matthew Reilly (before Seven Ancient Wonders).
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher for those who like "real" magic.
I'm halfway through Magician by Feist at the moment and I'm loving it.
The Greatest Show on Earth by Dawkins completely changed my understanding of evolution and natural selection

Does anyone have any suggestions for Fantasy books with really big, powerful magic? Most of the ones I find never seem to focus on the magic side of things

Lords of the Underworld - Gena Showalter (series)
Vampire Academy - Richelle Mead (series)
Georgina Kincaid series - Richelle Mead (succubus series)
True Blood
Millenium Trilogy - Steig Larson (3 books)
Harry Potter series

I'm right into the fantasy/immortal reading. Anyone with any suggestions, let me know :)

Love Reiley. Couldn't agree more :)

As for fantasy with powerful magic I'd be keen on something like that too!
I'm trying to remember this series i read when i was about 14, was about a girl who could talk with animals, sounds corny with just that but it was medieval sort of fantasy and it was brilliantly written (about 4 or 5 books) There was a fair bit of magic in that but not big and powerful like fire balls. It was more the telepathy and dare i say it "more realistic" sort of magic.

The book i mentioned in my first post, A Game of Thrones is by far the best fantasy series I've ever read. They've made a TV show about it which is pretty good as well, but the books will always be better.

a song of ice and fire (a game of thrones.) been a fan since it was first brought out.
any and all drizzt do'urden books by r.a. salvatore
merry gentry series,
clan of the cave bear and the earth's children series
many of the dragon lance books.

and i am happy to go on record for saying the song of ice and fire series (a game of thrones) is the greatest series ever!

I mainly read fantasy and historical fiction. My favourite author would have to be Juliet Marillier, anything by her is amazing! Other favourites are Fiona McIntosh, Karen Miller and Maria Snyder. I've loved everything I've read by all of them.

Another favourite author of mine is Kim Wilkins, though she is more paranormal fiction. But I've never been dissapointed in any of her work either.

Just been reading parts of a series People of the fire, people of the water etc etc. Not bad :)

I also love true crime, ghost stories, horror etc etc.

Housekeeping - Marilynne Robinson
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Puckoon - Spike Milligan

off the top of my head

I like period ..18th century...novels, fiction or non fiction. I'd have loved to have lived in the days of elegance and ladies with long dresses going to beautiful balls....as long as I was one of the rich ones. ;) I also enjoy reading about early Australia, pioneers, bush rangers, convicts etc. And things to do with the wars, the Holocaust, stories about our captive soldiers.

Shike and the last zinja by robert shire
then the harry potter books
Im just a big kid at heart:p

One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey
Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Kitchen Confidential - Anthony Bourdain
The Illiad and the Oddessy - Homer
Your Brain at Work - David Rock
1984 - George Orwell
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein
The Vegetarian Myth - Lierre Kieth
Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk
-Peter;2115432 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee [/QUOTE said:
I'll definitely second this. Truly underrated. I think most people that hate it do because it was required reading at school.

I'm in the middle of the final book (4 books) in the Inheritance Series ('ERAGON', 'ELDEST', BRISINGR' & 'INHERITANCE') by Christopher Paolini. There's magic throughout these books and I'm enjoying it.

Brent Weeks - The Night Angel Trilogy 'WAY OF SHADOWS', 'SHADOW'S EDGE' & 'BEYOND THE SHADOWS' are books full of magic and they are fast-paced. I really enjoyed these.

Wheel of Time - Robert jordan (be prepared for the long haul, the 13th and final book in the series is due this year)

For the best developed magic system I have yet to encounter try the "Mistborn" trilogy by Branden Sanderson.

For Me:
The Selfish Gene - Richard Dawkins (I started on The God Delusion, but even as a commited anti theist actually enjoy his popular science books more)
Breath - Tim Winton
Immediate Action - Andy McNab
Magician - Raymond E Feist
Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
Bird of Prey trilogy - Wilbur Smith
City of Beasts - Isabelle Allende
