Hey guys,

My adult ridge tailed monitor has had fairly runny poos ever since I purchased him in November/December. I can also say they ocationally smell horrible (he pooped on me and I had to fight my gag reflex). Though today's didn't smell that bad.

He's a male, roughly 60cm long and quite robust, feeds on pinkies, scrambled egg(eggs mixed with a small amount of herptivit and reptical) and large insects when I catch them (or large crickets when I get them). He currently lives in a 120 litre aquarium and has a basking spot that exceeds 50'C. For bedding I use kitty litter which I spot clean. He ocationally is allowed to roam my room under my supervision.

Today he did quite a runny poo, consisting of the normal brownish poo, the white/yellow urea and a fair bit of moisture. There was also some blood which seemed to appear as he was extending what I believe was his hemipenes. Upon closer examination I also noticed that the skin around his cloaca has started to shed. Is the blood possibly due to his shedding?

I've made an appointment at the warrenwood vet clinic (Warranwood Veterinary Centre: Exotic Vet - Unusual and Exotic Pet Care) for next saturday.

Regards,

Andrew

Change his diet to only dusted insects with the rare treat of pinkies and his poo will be more solid and smell less.

Righto. So any thoughts on the blood?

I've been doing some web research and I've come accross a couple cases where a prolapsed hemipene has involved some blood.

I've given him a bunch of adult crickets and shifted some of his decorations and added a branch to give him a 70+'C basking spot which he has been using.

feeding egg is stinky, give him woodies the odd pinky and sometimes some cut up pieces of lean chicken(dont have any idea about the blood)

If it was mine , id get out the microscope and check its droppings , id look for coccidiosis or worms.

it could be worms they can be present in the animal for a while show no signs it could have had them when you got the animal look in poo for any signs like worms in poo take a sample of the poo to the vet. if worms are present they will probably treat it with ivomec in a very small dose. worms would explain both sloppy poo and blood.

Well given that he just did a quite solid poop that consisted of some noticable bits of cricket exoskeleton I'd say diet was the reason for his runny poos. Also no sign of any blood in this poo or anywhere around the tank. So that's good news :)
