I am researching a new camera, I have found this Canon EOS 450D Kit 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS I am very inexperienced at using good camera's and don't know what any of this stuff means but it looks good to me. What do you guys think of this camera for novices through to more experienced snapper?

If it's for jut general use and a play around and nothin semi-pro > serious, go for it, its a perfect starter dslr kit :) Just shop around for the best deals. Also buy a few beginner dslr books they really are worth the money.

Thanks method, would you say $1100 is a good price?

That's definatley a good price, just make sure you get a good warranty with it. If you can spare an extra few hundred I would personally by the 450 body and then an aftermarket lens of some kind with whatever range your looking for. You'll find the quality of some of the lenses you can get for relatively the same price as the stock canon lens you will get a massive jump in quality/colour/sharpness.

I would have to agree with method in saying that i would get the Body and try and get yourself an aftermarket lens. The Canon 18-200mm lens is a good all round lens and if your just starting out then it will probably be fine for you.

Also have you looked at the Nikon D90? Its a fantastic camera. A little bit more expensive than the 450D but it does have HD video.

Upon ratings the D90 beats the lower end Canon DSLR's.

Thanks Guys, where would I find the aftermarket lens? I will look up the nikon d90 thanks camo.

there is also to canon 1000D.... i think that is like the model up and has HD video aswell. either canon or nikon are good cameras so ur safe either way.... but be warned... its a bit like the holden/ toyota thing, they are rivals and you will get put into the canon or nikon catergorey with the opposite one telling you they are better :p but they are all good ;)

thanks sweetangel. That makes sense. Camo I think the Nikon is too exy for me hubby is freaking about the $1100 already :)

did u want one with inter-changable lense??

other wise panasonic does a great all in one camera. i think its the lumix DMZ 50 or some thing. 18x zoom, great macro..... and under $1000. looks like a SLR aswell, its just got one lense though.

as another alternative :)

Channi... I have just Bought a Canon 1000D ... It is actually a Small Step down from the 450D... Though there isnt that much difference.....

I have to agree with doing some reading... I have just read 3 Books on DSLR's...And have learnt so much....

As for Price... I managed to get a deal... For Mid $800 on the Canon 1000D... Even though others were advertising it for $1049.... So definately shop around... And ask "Whats the Best you can do on that Camera?"

And I actually got the Twin Lens Kit... Camera Body, 18mm - 55mm Lense and a 75mm - 300mm Lense....

Feel free to ask me any questions about it..... Cant say I am the greatest photographer yet... But I am learning..He he

I have looked around alot and I really like the canon 450D. Thanks sweetangel I already have an all in one camera I want something i can control a little more. I will be looking for a decent macro lens soon any advice on this?

GO the Canon EOS 450D with the twin lens kit. I bought it 2 days ago and I've been having too much fun with it! Great for closeup pics. Here are a couple I've already taken (with only an hour practise).

I got mine for $1100 (and I knew the salesperson) and they wouldn't drop lower than that so that is a good price!

If you have a JB HIFI where you live check it out. They have the Canon ESO 450D with a twin lens kit 18-55mm and 55-250mm.... They are selling for $1398 or something like that, but talk them down!!! Like I said, I talked them down to $1100 (but I knew the guy)....

thanks seumas I will go in and have a look tomorrow. Your photos look really good. I have found one that has the package mentioned above for $1100 and other companies are offering for 1800 so I am pretty pleased with this price, I will check tomorrow though which is the better deal.

Awesome, good luck! And trust me you'll be taking photos as good as that, if not better. I've never used a DSLR before in my life and I was doing that within half an hour! So I'm sure you'll have just as much fun!!

I bought a Sony A300 because it has the image stabiliser built into the camera, no need to pay the extra cash on lenses with it built in now which can save you alot of dollars in the long run, the sony also comes with an adjustable lcd which means I can lay my camera on the ground tilt the lcd up and get a clear look at what is in frame!! Picked it up for $1100 with twin lense kit but I reckon the 200mm lense is a waste of time, all you need is the macro..

Yeah true, I was tossing up between the sony and the canon... only reason I chose the canon is coz their lenses are still cheap as... i was told sony was abit more expensive for lenses... But still I think they're pretty closely matched and it'd just come down to preference of looks/feel etc...

Im pretty sure canon lenses will fit on the Sony or any slr lense..

Nope they all have different mounts, you can get adapters but most of the time they arn't worth what they cost and some features on the lens can be disbled ie. auto focus.
