Thats a good idea IMO.
What about some little comps for non paying members where the prize is free subscription? You wouldn't need sponsors to donate prizes and it will give the newer members a little more incentive to contribute to the forum. It also helps with the whole "us & them" thing seeing as every competition is limited to subscribed members only. Just a suggestion.

Or you could say the $10 to become a subbie and in for the big prize.
That's the reward for supporting the forum that supports our hobbie and us.
It's a small price to pay for such a top place. And all goes towards the running costs me the site.
Without subbies and sponsors there wouldn't be sites like this
