Just a question for all Reptile People in here who breed their own Rodents for their feed supplies? Just wondering if anyone is having any probs. with tapeworms/protezoa in their Rodents? Well, we have got onto a good product from Vetafarm(over the counter, available from your local feed/fodder agent(have to order it!). This has cost us 2 visits to the local Riverland vet. Grrrrr!!!(If I'd gone on to the net, it wouldn't have cost us the vet visits!) It is called Wormout Gel. If you get it thru a vet, it is about $20. Thru your local supplier, only about $15. Same with a mite spray. It's an Avian product(birds). We paid about $10 more thru the vet. Stuff the vets! We are really pissed off. It is called Avian Insect Liquidator. Another Vetafarm Product. Contact them for quantities to use. And also withholding period. Just letting all rodent breeders know!! OK? Cheers Cheryl

I now understand your other post, wormout gel is available at our local petshop. I have used ivomec which is great for worms and mites, but you have to do two applications with a few weeks in between and then I wait a few more weeks before bumping anything for feed.
cheers

Yeah, we use ivomec here too.

works a treat (though very time consuming), nothing like spending two days syringing dots of ivomec on the back of hundreds of rats and mice.

Only time I have ever encountered mites was when I brought in new bloodlines from a previous place of employ

Meg, we've taken some mice/rats down to Sa Venom in Tanunda/Barossa Valley, South Austrralia. and they've done Autoposies
on our Rodents and have found Tapeworm/redmites(they cause spinners in rats)(those ones that spin around) in some of our rats. So it's probably best to spray your Rodents every 3 mths. with that Avian Insect Liquidator from Vetafarm. OK? Wormout Gel from Veta farm is for Tapeworm in Birds/Rodents, but get quantities from Vetafarm ok? Cheers Cheryl

b4 this post i hav never heard of tapeworm probs in rodents.
ps- i lov the avitar olivaceus

I WILL STATE, FROM SA VENOM, THAT IVOMEC WILL WORK IN ALL WORMS IN RODENTS, EXCEPT FOR TAPEWORMS!!! YOU NEED TO USE WORMOUT GEL FROM VETAFARM! Rodents will get tapeworms, and it will upset their breeding! Cheers Cheryl
