Hi people I wanted to introduce you to a special friend of mine..

"HERBIE"

I got Herbie for my 8th birthday, 2nd August 1988... Yep! 1988.. I'm turning 25 in a week so I guess that makes him about 17 years old.
Herbie has a long history and a big fan club but I'm starting to think he's going to out live me...

Could Herbie be the oldest Axolotl kept in Australia???

haha far out i dint know they lived that long but than again ive never really been into them...i think this birthday u should buy him a cake of some sort to celebrate

Dude! i cant belive youve still got HERBIE. thats insane!

hahah kingi well when he turns 18 you should shout him a beer too just tip it in his water hehehehe

i got the perfect idea for what to do on his 18th birthday! get him to become a salamander. technically axolotles are a tadpole form of a salamander, cept they can breed at this stage of development. you can make them become salamanders. turn him into salamander! then get him drunk!

hi kingii,
you sure nobody has been getting a younger guy every few years without you knowing, , only joking,

what i liked to see is somebody that has taken the long time commitment to keep it, how many people can say they still have any pet they recieved 17 years ago when they were only 8 years old,
you get my vote for herper of the week,

cheers,
steve..........

Yeah I was thinking that too Steve, well done on taking care of him so well for so long! I love axolotls :D :D :D

Amazing longevity due to good husbandry id say. Herby dosent look very big for his age though? :D

Hey SLACkra....

How do you turn him into a salamanda????

GOOD ON YA KINGII.... Thats a hell of a commitment... good to see.

I'd trust you to look after my animals anyday...

yeah how?

Has his colour changed Kingii? or was he always that colour?

ok got the link read the last 2 paragraphs! i wreckon the gov will find it interesting that they have allowed salamanders into the country!

When treated with hormones, the axolotl will usually begin to metamorphose, but in very rare cases it will metamorphose spontaneously, such as the metamorphosed wild type axolotl pictured here.

so i wreckon you should turn him into a salamander so he can walk the earth!

I used to have Axalotyls..I had a black one and a white one...I use to feed them freshly sliced Ox heart on a skewer and they loved it!!!

In regards to making them into Salamanders...

I heard and read in a book that you reduce the water in the tank gradually over many months and put a large rock in the tank..As the water subsides, the Ax will gradually come up onto the rock and "dry out" and the fins etc will shrink and the gills will close..
I heard that you then keep them as you would a frog..Warm and Misted...

Have never tried it myself though...

Thanks very much for all your comments guys...

I do like to think Herbie and I have a special relationship and its helped keep his candle burning for so long..

Truth is he gets the same attention as the next..

I guess just treat them as you'd wanna be treated and they'll show you the biggest rewards..

Thanks Again
Dave

Hey kingii, do you want me to explain to everyone you great keeping techniques, that have kept herbie alive so long......... hahahahahahahahahahahah lol

My nephew has had the same little goldfish for about 5 years now!!!

But i think its a case of "what the kid dont know wont hurt him" LMAO.

Good stuff Kingii.

And for those interested, St George Aquarium at rockdale sydney sell really brightly coloured black and yellow salamanders on occasion, about $50 they were last time i saw them.
