Beardie Food Portions!

Hey everyone,

I have being doing a fair bit of research lately about bearded dragons and in many different care sheets they claim that as bearded dragons get older you should cut down on feeding them crickets or woodies and feed them more veggies! Is this true? Also I am currently feeding my bearded dragons small crickets how do I know when to start feeding them Medium sized crickets?

Yes, when they are older their diet needs change to more fruit/vege then live food. What is generally 80% live food becomes 80% fruit/vege, from my understanding anyway!! If i am wrong, someone will correct me! As for when to know when to go up a size in crickets, if they are similar size to the width between your babies eyes, they are safe.

I feed my beardie on bearded dragon pellets and also crickets. The pellets have all the nutrients they need to stay healthy. My beardie is now 7 and i got him when he was 1. I've always fed him pellets but give him treats once a week with crickets and sometimes vegetables/ fruit. He's really healthy and seems to love them.

I am not 100% sure as i too am only new to lizards, but i think after the first 2yrs. Once my baby turns 1, i plan to increase the veggies to a 50/50 ratio, then after a yr adjust both live & veggies accordingly, which will be something along the lines of veggies daily & live food just a couple times a week.

As for the pellets, i always have some in Muppet & Mimi's enclosures for them to pick at if they wish, but have found they rarely ever touch them, in fact ive seen Muppet eat one tiny pellet in the 4mnths i have had him, he much prefers his greens!!
