Gday,

Originally posted here under Bozza148 but can't for the life of me remember the password.

Returned home from work today to find my Male beardie (about 2.5years old) making strange noise, sounding like vomitting (but not vomitting, opening his mouth rather wide continuously and then occasionally shacking his head wildly. Goes on for about 10 - 15mins then stops.

I will phone a vet tomorrow to make an appointment but, just wondering whether anyone has any idea what the problem may be?

Standard food I feed him is Boc Choi, Carrot, Apple, Mealworms and crickets. His habitat consists of a basking rock, hollow log and water with sand for the ground, some some covered by newpaper.

My first thoughts are that he has ingested sand and his body is rejecting it.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

could possibly be respiratory infection.
definitely get a reptile vet to check him over
anyone else...

Had one exhibiting exactly the same - thought RI, but because of the thrashing decided was impaction. Vet treated for RI, but found impaction when I took her back & said that's what I thought - she was also pooing, although runny, still eating but only 1 or 2 instead of 20!!!, & if ate more would especially then thrust around. The opening mouth & strange sounds was the digestive fluid coming up into her lungs - not a well little girl at all.
My point - don't muck around with this one, & make sure the vet checks, don't take no for an answer - keep us informed!

Last week he did have some runny poo but....over the last day or two hes been fine.

I must admit over the last week he has been a little quiter than normall...

He hasnt been shy of eating either

hey bozza state are you in?
you will be able to find a reptile vet in the back page of the reptiles australia mag, it lists one for each state at least i think.

Hi guys,

Taken him to the vet and left him to allow for blood / poop tests.

Blood tests indicated a high white blood cell count which the vet things indicates an infection somewhere in his systems. Long way to go but hopefully antibiotics will fix the problem.

Thanks for all the help to!

Dwayne passed away last night at the vent - unable to establish why at this stage but theyve asks to do tests for the purpose of science which Ive allowed.

Very sad day for me today - sucks getting attached to a pet only to see them leave unexpectedly.

oh no. poor guy.
hopefully they find out what the problem was.
will you get another to replace him?

Oh Bozza, I'm so so sorry. I know how you feel, as all animals become members of your family, and an unexpected death is just devastating. Take some time to get over the shock.
Let us know what the results are too, so that hopefully it doesn't happen again, to any of us.
R.I.P little guy.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the well wishes - much appreciated.

Apparently he died of liver failure.....yet to determine cause of this....I honestly have no idea.

While I have every intention of replacing my old friend I won't be in any rush anytime soon.

Thanks again,

Rod

really sorry to hear that Bozza. :(

liver failure in beardies can be caused by a diet high in fat, (they should be 90% vego once theyre grown)overweightness or a sudden drop in weight where the liver cant process the sudden influx of fat.
did they say his liver was fatty?

otherwise it could be plain bad luck.

hope ur ok. :(
