hey guys, just picked up a 3 y/o black headed python about 3 weeks ago. the last week or so she has made funny hissing sounds. now she is blowing bubbles and making gargling/wheezing noises! doesnt sound too good.
im having a hard time maintaining 35 at the hot end but its around 31 - 33. i have a heat matt cranking under one of the hides. any ideas?? should i take her to the vet??

From what you have discribed you have got a snake with an advanced RI,
You need to get it to a reptile vet asap and have it put on a corse of antibiotics.
Keep the heat up in the enclosure and minimise humidity.
If it goes unchecked it can be fatal!

took her in, i got injections to give her for the RI. vet said 50 - 50 chance of her
pulling thru :(

:( I hope she comes through ok for you

Its probably a bit soon for recriminations, but she must have had RI when she was sold to you I would think?

Good luck...looks like you've taken the best course of action....make sure you talk to whomever sold you the snake, as they should at least know that they have RI onsite.

another good treatment to help with RI is taking it into the bathroom when you have a shower and let them breathe in the steam or use a nebuliser as this will help to break up the mucous. another tip you can try is to put yr snake in a basket, cover it in a towel or blanket and put a bowl of steaming water with eucalyptus oil in it beside the basket and cover it with the same towel or blanket so the snake can inhale it. My Bhp has a RI at the moment and gets antibiotics thru the nebuliser twice a day and he showers with me every night... He LOVES the shower.....I just stand over the plug hole and he swims around in the bottom.

Any more info regarding ur BHP Montyr6...How is she going now..Considering you only purchased her a few weeks prior, have you been in contact with the person you brought her from to let them no whats happening..

bit of a late reply sorry mate, took her to the vet. the vet was pretty sure she wasnt going to make it and just gave me some injections to give her everday for a week to get rid of the R.I.

To our suprise she pulled through and is back to her normal self! thanks for the advice btw everyone.
