Hey guys i have just started to breed rats and they have had their first litter, II was wondering what is the best way to kill them so they don't grow too big for my smaller snakes?

For anything up to about weaner size chuck them at a hard surface. It will kill them instantly.
For weaner up to about 150g, cervical dislocation can be used but probably only if you have had a bit of experience.
For anything over 150g, a good whack to the back of the neck or gassing would be appropriate.

I tried breeding rats for snake food but I was phisically unable to kill the babies :( I was going to throw them really hard on the ground but their cute little faces and when they started nuzzling into my hands and their mother was looking at me and, and, and....I can't harm an animal, even if it is for my snakes :( Now I'm opening up a rattery, I'm a softie :p

But I'm sure this isn't the case for most rat breeders :D Sax has pretty much given all the info you need and the thread mentioned above is the 'go to' place for these things :)

Gas chambers are good for larger rats but is a waste on pinkies, just throw them hard at the ground, etc. That is probably the most humane way to kill them.

I gassed my first couple of mice yesterday. While it's not easy it needs to be done for the greater good & also to relieve my wallet.

Knowing it was humane and not watching them suffer made it easier. I don't think I could throw them at the ground or CD efficiently enough to give it a go. Luckily all my snakes are now big enough to accept food items big/old enough to gas.

I did have one question though and shall ask here for the benefit of the original poster & anyone else curious:

When the co2 was introduced it did take a while & I feel that 'feathering' the sodastream resulted in better dosing than big bursts. However I did witness increased heartbeat before they went to sleep, is this normal or was my dosing incorrect? Increased heart rate was witnessed but no discomfort.

I also found initially I put to many 'outlet' holes in the chamber as I was worried about blowing the lid off. I used holes about 10% of the inlet and about 6 of them but I taped most of them up.

im also new to co2 and have been breeding mice recently and testing my co2 system...1st time is sad ..at the end of the day co2 is just starving them of air and is not Humain (would u like to sufforcate?)...but the RSPCA state this is ok till some thing better comes along....i agree that pinkies should be slammed.....more humain IMO

I WISH PEOPLE WOULD NOT THINK THAT CO2 PUTS YA LITTLE RODENTS TO SLEEPPPPPPPP............its just taking Oxygen out and we dont live with out it

I still beg to differ with your reasoning. Plenty of full grown adults (human beings) have fallen asleep thanks to co2 exposure. Administered the correct way it is quite sufficiently humane.

And in regards to your oxygen reference, we breath air, not oxygen. Too much oxygen will kill you to....

Im sure you'll find that you could breath 100% oxygen and it won't kill you.
