Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows the formula needed to calculate how much a heating globe is costing to run, if anyone knows can you please provide an example.

Cheers.

Elec is charged by the kWh and is quite easy to work out. 1 kW switched on for one hour costs one unit. therefore 100W on for ten hours = 1kWh = one unit. look on any of your electricity bills to find the cost per unit in your area or circumstance and multiply that by your usage and hey presto, that is how much it costs to run your enclosure.

Hey afro, does that mean that when a wattage rating is given, for example 60W globe or 1200W heater etc... That this is the number of watts that will be used per hour??

We used to share a house with anothjer couple. Whn we moved there electricity bill dropped by about $1200 pa. Part of that was a turtle pond in the cellar of the house that had heat and a pump on 24/7.

my formula:

1) Get the electricity bill and hide it for a while
2) Think about nice things to do for hubby over the next couple of days
3) After a nice massage ( and maybe other things  ), say, "Well, our electricity bill came in today, and it was only $###.
4) Should go okay, but in case it doesn't, have back up plan of 'Well, you bought a new hard drive and video card last month, electricity is a necessity', or 'It's only $20 more than last year' and hope he doesn't have a good memory (when in reality, it is $150 more than last year, in the BR period)

BR = before reptiles

Hopefully this will work for me when I test this formula, will let you know.

Well I worked out that it would cost me about $40 a year for each enclosure I run (60W globe 16 hrs a day + thermostat all day), this is fine by me I will have 10 up and running as soon as possible now :). It costs me about $300 a year just to run my PC so I can easily get this passed by the wife. :) LOL

"Well, you spent money on those smoke alarms, and we havent had a single fire!"........
think it'll work when she sees the $400 power bill?

(60W globe 16 hrs a day + thermostat all day),

You only count the hours the globe is actually ON and not the hours it is off. If it is a normal make/break thermostat like the IMIT's or the black probe stats they are only a switch and do not use any electricity.

Hey afro, does that mean that when a wattage rating is given, for example 60W globe or 1200W heater etc... That this is the number of watts that will be used per hour??

No mate, the wattage rating is just that a wattage RATING. A 1000W load on constantly for one hour uses 1kWh of electricity. 1kWh of energy is what is referred to on your bill as 1 unit.
Hope this helps.
