hey guys , need a bit of help with my cannon 50d , i recently got it back from my sister and someones been stuffing around with my settings :x i had a family friend help me out with it last time he was around but cant remember how to do it again

what i need to do is change that setting that controls how long it takes between you pressing the button and the shot being taken , i know it has a special photography name but i just cant think of it , its been set to take ages in between so you need a tripod or a steady hand and a completely still subject (which none of my snakes are) to get a decent shot and its annoying the crap out of me , any help would be appreciated

cheers thomas

So it's on a timer or something at the moment? I've got a 500d not a 50d but I think you'll find what you're looking for under the AF-drive button, the wheel should let you cycle through the shooting modes.

ahh im not to sure , might be a timer but i think its that shutter speed thing if that sounds right , which wheel are you talking about , the one on the top left hand side with all the different symbols , the big one you just spin around next to the display screen or the other one near the picture taking button next to little screen on top

its pretty obvious i know jack huh :) the camera was my dads hence me having a nice camera with no idea what im doing i cant find any kind of manual either

if it was a timer wouldn't there be some sort of countdown showing up on the little screen on top ?

ok, sounds like shutter speed (exposure) Assuming it's set out the same as my 500d you should see where it has a number like 1/125 you should be able to scroll the wheel on the front of the camera (the piece you can roll with you finger) to make the /number larger or smaller. To get a fast shutter speed you'll want the number to be bigger.

It may just be easier to shoot in full auto mode, there'll be a dial with pictures on it on the top of the camera, if you select the green box you wont have to worry about exposure or anything, the camera will handle it all.

cheers sara , auto mode is not an option , i despise auto mode gives me more headaches than using it on manual , it just never seems to take the picture for some reason or it takes a picture of the background with the subject blurry

all sorted but , i managed to get in touch with the guy that helped me last time , ive now set it as one of the custom thingy majigs although it still isnt the same as it was will just have to get him to tweak it again when i see him , this camera is great but annoys the crap out of me at times with all its different settings that i dont understand :?

If your photos were blurred as a result of motion, then as Sara suggested it was due to a slow shutter speed. By increasing the shutterspeed you are reducing the amount light that gets in, which can be compensated for by increasing the aperture setting (= decreasing the f-stop) or increasing the ISO setting (= film plate sensitivity), or a combinationof both.
