G'day guys,

My beloved old Jeep Grand Cherokee finally kicked the bucket and is being put to the wreckers :)cry:)

I am shopping for a new car and am looking for a 4WD ute... I have found a 2002 Hilux Xtra cab that I like the looks of but need to ask a question about its engine and I have NO IDEA about cars.

The engine is a 3L 4 cylinder deisel - is this going to be a weak, slow engine? Or will it be OK? I know a 4 cylinder petrol is fairly weak, so is there any difference with a diesel?

Please teach me cars!

If its not turbo then a 3 litre diesel may be a bit underpowered. I have a Jackaroo SE 3 litre turbo diesel, does 11km per litre and you simply wouldn't know you were driving a diesel.

the straight diesel will be a bit weak especially on the highway if you are trying to overtake. But they are a good engine and good car.

Between the 3 engine variants in the 02 xtra cabs they all use different ratios in the gearboxes to maximize the engines torque. Best bet is take it for a decent test drive up decent hills and also see what acceleration is like from 80kms. Finished my trade on these and would be quite happy with either. Even the 2.7l petrol models went well.

i have a 2.6 petrol injected which goes pretty damn well with extractors, uni filter and sport exhaust. but the diesel might lag a little even tho its a 3ltr

What do you plan to use it for?
Will it be loaded up with gear regularly?

Rip old Jeep

Shutting this one down guys. Thanks for the advice but my mechanic did a prepurchase check for me and found it has been in the floods... and is packed full of mud and corrosion and other such undesirables. Gotta love used car lots!

Cheers anyway
