TURTLES are on the move in the City of Wanneroo, with residents urged to be cautious on roads and pathways around wetlands.
Long-necked oblong turtles instinctively nest some distance from the water’s edge and will cross roads to find suitable nesting sites during breeding season, which runs from September until February.
Hatchlings travel back to the water between June and August.
Motorists may not easily see turtles because they are small and black, blending in with the colour of the road.
The City urged motorists to slow down and drive carefully around wetlands, particularly around stretches of road that have ‘turtle crossing’ signs.
