Went to change water this morning, discovered "Baby" Darwin juvie missing !! what a panic, sh's kept in the bedroom and I was facing a nightmare search, im talking huge open wardrobes packed to max, baskets of unironed washing, you name it! not impressed, thought she'd made it to freedom outside and become kookaburra dinner, kids went off to school in tears, convinced that was the end of her.
Told em id search all day, rushed back home after droppin em off at schoolbus, after 10 mins searching around enclosure i found her in a box of old videos, happily coiled up but cool to touch. WHEW !! big releif I can tell ya! straight back in her tub she went to get warm, naughty little snakey.
Seems when I checked on her last night before bed, I was so tired i didnt close the tub lid properly, and she made a run for it!
Im very lucky and happy camper, she could have easily made it out under the back or front door, or down under the floor where the bourds dont meet the wall(very old house) dont even want to think about the possibilities! she's on "lockdown" till further notice. :D

Thanks, sure seems that way, I could not beleive my stupidity after recent threads, if my legs bent the right way id have been kicking my own ****! very releived indeed, maximum security lockdown for the little #@%& !

good to hear you got her back inny! :D

no offence to you or anyone else tho but i dont get how so many people seem to lose their snakes! i always double check the cage doors and have always made sure the cage is secure with no escape proof gaps before i put anything in it. i understand that you were tired and made a mistake which can happen to anyone but it just seems to happen a hell of a lot around here lol. of course now that i've said that i'll go home to find all of my snakes missing so i look like a hypocrit

I think I've become a little relaxed in thinking I know what the snake is going to do half of the time, which in way is very foolish, as I am still very much a novice at keeping them. But I like to put her in a sunny position inside on weekends and wander off around the house doing a few things while she coils up and takes in a few natural rays near a closed window. Rarely does she ever move except to position a different part of herself in the sun, and she really seems to enjoy it.

I think after everything thats been going on here lately I'll be paying a bit more attention to her while she's out  I'd die if she went missing! It must be an awful feeling to have one disappear like that :(

lol i agree but i've never heard it happen so much since i joined as it has recently! and i don't really consider it luck, and i don't think you're bound to lose one eventually if you make sure your enclosures are secure and check doors! i'm not trying to sound like the almighty lady who never loses snakes lol i just think maybe people should take more care in making sure an enclosure is escape proof before you buy your snake! it must be horrible to come home with a brand new baby and have it go missing the next day. or to lose a snake you've had for a while and have grown attached to would be just as bad or worse. once again, i'm not trying to pick on you inny or anyone else individually, i just think maybe people should check how secure their cages are before buying something to go in it. :)

RE: Re: RE: Close call !

yeah they snakes are revaulting they are all trying to get out i know all my enclosures are escape proof but i think the odd slip up happens to every body i hope it never happens to me but it might anyways until it dose ill just put it down to luck cause like i said there have been a few times where i could of lost one i just think my snakes love me to much to leave lol

We lost a baby carpet (actually somebody tried to steal it) and when my partner came back into the room this person must of dropped it (there was no way the little fella would of got out without some help).
We thought gone for good ( I cried for a week) at least six months later on the other side of the room we had a 2ft tank with a baby pygmy dragon in it. Went to feed the little dragon and it kept running over to us, usually runs the other way, and thought must be really hungry, so picked up his little hide and sure enough here is the baby carpet curled up under his hide. I think he was running over to us trying to say "Help. there is an anaconda in my bed". So I always say to anyone at least give it six months.

Glad to hear you found yours Inny, I know how it feels, like you have got the biggest kick in the guts.

Good to hear you found her Dan, it's really sad when ppl loose their pets.

Thanks for kind thoughts everyone, cant tell you all how glad I am that I found her quickly! kids will be over the moon when they get home shortly.
I was dog tired last night, at "stick matches under your eyelids " stage, I checked her real quick and put the lid back (i thought) and sacked out!
Wasnt till this morning I noticed it open and freaked out!
It can happen to anyone I guess, Im usually paranoid about security but I was so, so tired. :D

Btw shes in a secure tub, it was my fault entirely.

Zoe, the reason it's happening a lot right now is.... it's hatchy season.
It's not inevitable that you will have an escapee, but a lot of those that do escape are due to a very simple mistake that ANYONE can make. You don't close the lid properly due to the phone ringing, or the dog barking..... The lid looks closed but it's not.... the cat knocks the tub off the shelf.....
Anyway, glad you got him back Dan.

Mags, as i said, i wasn't trying to pick on anyone individually, and i do understand that it can happen to anyone as i also said. it just seems to happen to a lot of people. i'm sorry if i offended anyone, including you mags, but it wasn't my intention.

I certainly learnt my lesson. Our Childrenii were only put in the fish tank while we waited for our new enclosure. We knew they could squirm through the gap in the wood lid so hubby put that thick spongy tape around it but it didn't quite reach the full girth. I think the gap was about 3 cm long. How foolish were we thinking they still wouldn't get out. The three days of worry and then only to find her after being "played with" by a dog. The sight was agony. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It was a very painful and sad lesson to learn but we spent the money, got a good enclosure and the fish tank is for turtles now. We even went as far as to buy lock down click clacks for our hatchies.
I never want to go through that again.
I'm glad you found your baby instar.

Once i didnt shut the lid properly on my enclosure and in the middle of the night a CD fell into the floor which woke me. I dunno why but i got up and turned on the light and sure enough my male coastal was climbing up onto my CD player. I was very luckey that it woke me up!!

my dogs would eat anything that got out, so im extra vigilant, especially as all my herps live outside with the dogs. Glad the story had a happy ending inny. Hatchies are amazingly good at escaping, i know, i lost my first snake ever a beautifull little stimmie, never to be found again, i learnt my lessont he hard way. Since then ive never had an escape i think... although my memory is pretty bad... but all the snakes ont he books are accounted for. :)

Angel
