Hi guys, I have a 5 year old coastal carpet, and he's always been a great feeder. I had him down near Canberra, but have moved back to Sydney with him (same cage setup etc.). He ate one large rat when I first had him here, but for the last 6 weeks he has only wasted food. I thought it might be the size of rat he was having problems with, but now I suspect he has gotten used to the smell of the rats I sourced in Canberra (from Canberra Exotic Reptiles) and he maybe doesn't like the new rats (from Dr Doolittle's, bought from the pet shop in Chatswood Westfield). These new rats do smell a little odd to me, but I'm not sure if that could be the problem. He's certainly "roaming" around a lot as if he's pretty hungry, and has been making a more concerted effort than usual to bust out of his cage, haha :) Temps are okay (and nothing's changed from Canberra, anyway).

Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on where I can get good quality cheap rats from? These ones I got from the pet shop were just insane with pricing. I'm tempted almost to see if the Canberra Exotics people will ship them up to me, probably cheaper than paying what I did in Chatswood!

Noone has any ideas? :( Could he just not like the smell of the new rats?

It's such a change of personality for him, I'm a little worried :(

It is possible that it's the rats. If they smell off, the snake might not eat it- as they're typically not carrion eaters. Try to source some new rats, or even change to chicks or quails, and see if he eats those. It's possible it's just that particular pet store.
