I recently aquired a female opaline coastal carpet. She had access to a male and was witnessed doing the horizontal folk dance with the male one a couple of times. I've never had any thing to do with pregnant snakes and was wondering if anyone could explain the possibilities of pregnancy and maybe just check out the photos and let me know what you think. It would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

She has an opaline colouration on her underside, which is pretty rare apparently?? ill try get some better pics35446_470847727794_501342794_5658517_99495_n.jpg

Was thinking if she is preggas what do I do now? When do carpets normally lay and can she look after the eggs herself or should I steal em and incubate them?

G'day RiBeag,

Firstly, someone's had a bit of lend of you with regards to your snake being "opaline". That's primarily a bird term, that I have never seen used in the reptile trade before. It's just a normal Carpet Python from your photo's.

Secondly, you will need to provide a warm, humid lay box for her. The best way to do this is to place a dark box, with a hole a bit larger than the largest section of the snake, with some damp (not wet) sphagnum moss in it. Put the box in a position where it will be 26-28 degrees inside. She will lay in there. It's best to build yourself an incubator, and remove the eggs once she has laid them. Incubate them at 31.5 degrees or so, in a mix of vermiculite and water (approximately 100mL of water per 100gm of vermiculite). Wait 55-60 days and you'll have baby snakes.

Hey i was just wondering if my spotted python was pregnant she turned down her first meal and has occassionally been turn up parts of her body towards the heat lamp she has been quite active and her tail gets a bit fatter where her vent is im not sure and i really need to find out i also saw her mating with my male about 5 or 6 times she also seems alot fatter then normal but i just need to know if it is likely that she is pregnant.
thanks

If you have kept her in adequate conditions and she has been mating there's a good chance she is gravid anteresia are dead easy to breed my female has produced eggs last 3 seasons with no set cooling regimes or anything she does it all her self wait until your spotty sheds next and a month later you will have eggs you should be able to almost see the eggs when you hold her up and look down her body in the later stages you may need to start thinking about an incubator. Remember breeding them is easy it's raising healthy hatchies and selling them which is the tough part

i have looked at her belly quite alot she has a different shape on the bottom of her stomach then the male it is quite hard to explain but the male tucks in his belly but she tries to but she gets these two kinks on the sides of her belly around where im holding her and she also tried digging near the water bowl for the first time are these also signs of her being gravid

I personally think that she would hold the bottom third of her body differently in a more curved tight swolen position if gravid. Anyway most Coastals would not have ovulated by this time........ ripened follicles maybe but gravid ?? does she have a tight feel to the bottom third of her body ??? sensitive to touch ?? or does she feel like a water balloon ????
