So.. I got a Darwin about 4 months ago, about 10 months old. has been eating fine up until about 4 weeks ago, had one bad shed but other than that has been perfect.

He hasn't eaten in about 4 weeks, and today when I had him out, I noticed he sounds wheezy. I'm guessing he has a respiratory infection. My question is.. Is it ok to take him to a vet that isn't a reptile specialist? I've made an appointment at the vet surgery here (Crookwell NSW) and she hasn't got much (if any) reptile experience, but said she would read up today and should be able to help.

Also, what would cause the R.I? There's no humidity in his enclosure, correct temps, gradient etc..

Any help much appreciated!

If a non-reptile vet is your only option, go for it.
They will be able to (I'm sure) telephone other vets and consult with them on the symptoms and treatment, and if they are willing to check it over, sometimes thats as good as it gets.
Good luck :)

Yeah, I think it's basically my only option for the time being. Hopefully it will just be straightforward, antibiotics and easy :) There aren't really any reptile vets near here at all. There was one in Goulburn (about 1/2 hour away) but I'm told he's retired.. the next would be 2+ hours away. Obviously if it comes to it, I'll take him there if I need to though..

IMO one of the best tips also you can try,up the temperature to around 34-36c..Depending on the severity of R.I if in fact the Darwin does have it,a trip to the vet would be the best option...A few years ago i had a 2year Port Mac which had a slight wease and a few bubbles coming out of its nose,The closet reptile vet was 45mins away but because it was the weekend,he wasnt in til Monday. So I increased the temperature and by Monday morning the snake was fine...BUT on this occasion it worked for me,HOWEVER IMO it may not work for you, just giving you a heads up on my experince...

I've read up on a few older threads on here regarding the "wheezing" noise just because I was bored. Anyway! they said that it MIGHT be an old shed stuck around the nose area. Also, it's only dangerous when bubbles are blowing out of the snake's nostrils.

But if you can get it to a vet then do it I guess..just a bit of old info for you.

Cheers,
Nick
