There's an email gonig around (I've received it from three different people) with photos attached of deepsea creatures washed up onshore after the tsunami. I don't know if that's correct, or just a good story, but they are certainly denizens of the deep and pretty weird. There were 24 in all, here are some of the weirder/scarier ones:

Black Dragonfish, with lure

The aptly named blobfish

Remember these guys next time you go swimming at the beach!

The fangtooth is a type of anglerfish. Whilst I was in Italy, I went past a fish market right on the dock. The fish are thrown straight of the boats. They had caught heaps of these fish all about the size of a football or smaller, pretty much the size I thought they'd be until I saw one that was been sold in pieces. They only part left was the head and it's mouth was large enough to use as a hool-a-hoop.

Oops, it told me there were errors, so I resent the post. Looks like there were none.

I saw the first one there on a deep sea dive a year or two ago, the others all have the deep sea characteristics so id say your info is correct, from my experience anyway. They are awesome photo, most people would never get to see these kind of fish as they hang out at around 150 ft and further below, with the australian standard dive being 30 ft and NOS needed to go to those awesome depths.

All i can say is, if u see one of those in the sea, u know ur in deep water and just keep ur fingers outa their mouths.

Greebs,

There's a few more pix in the email that I didn't post that are on that site - the Coffin Fish, Rock Crab, Sea Spider, Blind Lobster, Shovel-nosed Lobster, Prickly Shark, Stargazer, Hatchetfish etc.

But Nephrurus' point is that the photos are not of creatures washed up after the tsunami, which is what I suspected. They're still scary looking creatures though.

Thanks Nephrurus!

This is a weird one, the Mossfish.

According to the accompanying text:

"This name doesn?t do this fish justice. One researcher onboard suggested a name like the Starburst Anglerfish would be more appropriate. This is the female of this strange anglerfish...Less than 20 specimens have ever been collected of this species, only six in the entire Pacific and Indian oceans (in an area two thirds of the earth?s circumference!). To show how rare many of these deep-sea fishes are, this species is considered the ?common? member of the family! Others are only known from a single specimen. Like other anglerfishes, males are very different. They are small and have simple fins. In this species, the male latches on to the female and doesn?t let go. Their skin fuses and he stays as a permanent pimple with eyes, drinking blood and making sperm."

Isn't nature incredible? How do they find these fish out in the middle of the ocean? (probably a stupid question huh?)
