Can I use a dimmer on MV? I ask because the heat output from a MV will be a little too high for my dwarf beardies and I just want to knock the heat down a bit

According to the herp shop website MV's ain't suitable for use with thermostats

Yeah I read the same thing but I wasn't putting it on a thermo just a dimmer so I'm not sure. Thanks

Im not 100% but if its a manual dimmer wired in i dont see any problem.

In my experience ( used to work at a light factory) MV lamps are ballasted either self (ie like a compact fluro) or
external (like a fluro tube) . If you've ever tried to dim fluro lights
you would know you need special electronic ballasts to be successful,
Most MV bulbs are used in commercial applications where there
is no need for dimming. Like any gas discharge lamps MV's need
to fire up and warm up so all the voltages etc need to be right.
An on/off thermostat would work but the life of you expensive bulb
would be severely reduced as most need to be off for a min time before restart.
You would probably blow the lamp. You could try ringing Thorn lighting
as things change and it's been a while since I was involve
in this field. This is probably why MV lamps aren't recommended
for beginners (not saying you are!) as really need to be matched
to the enclosure well and monitored to ensure no overheating issues.
Also remember some concerns with excessive UV for beardies
with some of these lamps, probably from somewhere on this forum

Hope this helps and didn't add any confusion.

Joe

Cheers for that. I thought it might be something like that. I was looking at those metal halite globes but they need some form of ballast control as well. Might stick to ceramics and compact fluro for the time being.

Why not just use Flood lights from bunnings, And build or buy A temporary outdoor enclosure for weekends that is what I do with my beardie and he has never had A problem except when I firrst got him the petstore was using A really old UV tube and one of his back legs was kind of lame.

Never use a dimmer with them they will die in 3 days use a on off or a timer.

Cheers Brenton
