Hi all. im having problems with keeping a hot and cool zone in my enclosure. enclosure is 1000x400x400. im using a 35watt heat fan on one side in the corner and nothing on the other side temps sit at about 30 one side and 28 the other. the enclosure also has a UVB light on top which seems to put out a lot of heat. it covers the length of the enclosure. im under the impression that the uv light needs to be on for the snakes. is it normal for a uv light to put out so much heat?

A heat fan? I think that may be your problem. A fan blowing heat in a enclosure would just circulate all the heat. I'd use a radiant heat panel or a ceramic heat emitter.

Yeah it's more likely to be the heat fan than the fluro. Those heat fans do terrible things for your humidity too.
What species of snake is it? UV isn't necessary for snakes except maybe Diamonds but people can't even agree on that one.

I think the heat fan could be the cause of your problem, like caliherp suggested, have a look at using radiant heat panels or ceramic's. I personally prefer ProHerp Panel products.

What do you mean? Does it raise the humidity?

Heat fans are probably the worst possible invention for reptile enclosures. They ABSOLUTELY prevent the potential of having a heat gradient in the enclosure because they force hot air everywhere, and rather than raising the humidity, they dry things out impossibly.

I would NEVER recommend them to any reptile keeper. Get rid of it and go for a more passive heat source.

I feel real stupid. I didnt even think the fan would b blowing the heat around.. Blonde moment. I have a jungle and a coastal. Thanks all for ur help

from what i have heard they dry the air out. i tend to believe this as my woma never had a decent shed when i had his running, now since its been off hes shed near perfectly.
they have both had 3 good sheds since ive had them. clean sheds and both werent very irratible. my jungle is very rare.lol she likes being handled, my 2 year old daughter is aloud to hold her (under supervision)

Keep it simple...heat mat or cord with tile over and if ya wan low watage viewing light then so be it and maye the o'l red lamp low watage again to take the winter night chill outa the air....apart from that it makes a pretty normal ambient rel life temp thingmyjigy
