Hey where is the thread on the amazing discovery from Pilbara Pythons that was here yesterday?

Wow! Well all I can say is I have been bitten MANY times by my beardies and I'm still here ;)
(Maybe try a search on Pilbaras posts?? Might be under chit chat or general)

Maybe just don't let them chew :)

Yeh I checked that actually bek. Still couldn't find it. Was there some sort of incident yesterday I don't know about?

Why does it say Iguana, like the bearded dragon?

Bearded dragons arent iguana's are they?

Sorry if this is a stupid question..

Hey i am sorry but that is absolute cods wallap!!! Granted that venom is a specially adapted saliva, this i am fine with. What i dont agree with is the way they are saying that lizards and monitors can produce venom. The reason a person falls ill and has so many side affects from a goanna bite is due to the amount of harmful bacteria that is ingestid from a diet of carrion. I have been bitten many times by captive monitors that are fed fresh meats and had nothing more than a wosey feeling from the couple of pints of blood i lost. I hope this doesnt offend but i feel that the next research project should be to identify whats between the ears of the reporter and 'researcher'. Maybe the have both made an innocent mistake and got a lace monitor confused with a Gilla Monster i mean i do that all the time ha ha ha

i dont think you theory is correct, judging by what one article said...

" His suspicions were alerted, however, when he saw a zookeeper in Singapore develop symptoms rapidly after being bitten by a captive Komodo dragon which had been brought up on fresh food.

"It didn't sit right with me; bacteria don't work that fast," Dr Fry said.

When he studied an Australian lace monitor, or common goanna, the closest living relative of a Komodo dragon, he found a huge gland running down the side of its jaw. Squeezing it released the venom.

"You could see it pooling at the base of the teeth. It's amazing what you find when you look."

Take a look for yourself...

I am not professing to be an expert by any means. Just reading through the articles and from practical monitor experience, husbandry and anatomy i just cant see the correlation. I just went outside and looked for glands on mine and i sqeezed but no juice. Anyway congrats to Dr. Fry on his research i do wish him the best of luck. My final comment is though it cant be too potent otherwise many of us would have been dead a couple of times over even if it was by a beardy.

It goes without saying that the venom would not be too potent. If it killed people in seconds we would have known all about it years ago.

It could still be accurately described as venom if it had no effect on humans.

Just because a goanna has venom it does not mean that it will use it every time it gives you a nip.

An expert in venom would probably know exactly where to squeeze to get the venom to come out.

All in all I think the paper they published will change the way we think about the evolution of venemous reptiles.

I know this post is a bit late... but...

Potency of the venom really doesnt have much to do with how dangerous they are, in this case. Their venom delivery system is very poor, and they only delivers minute quantities of venom (thats if it even chooses too).

You will find that pretty much all of the recent research done on small elapids state that their venom is very potent. However, their yeild is so small that it has little or no effect on most people.

I think we should make a knee-jerk bureaucratic assessment and put all dragons and varanids on Class 2 licence. What do you reckon? WOW, the $ signs are astronomical.
