What would cause a snake to drink excessive amounts of water?

I know your first answer is going to be dehydration but the snake I am asking for, was in an outdoor aviary with a half-wine barrel full of water. Although I never actually saw her drinking, she did spend a lot of time at the barrel - sometimes coiled up in the bowl of the statue and I even watched her swimming.

She spent 2 weeks in hospitalisation on fluids, and was taken off injectible fluids when it was witnessed she drinking on her own. The vet noted, and I have noticed since getting her home she has guzzled water like you would not believe. Her head always in the bowl and you see her "cheeks" moving as she takes in water.

Something that is causing increased waterloss.

So kidney disease ie unable to concentrate urates resulting in excessive water loss. Check the size of its kidneys. Xray or palpation.

also something like diabetes causes increased water loss.

Thanks Jonny. Funny you say that as often she was lossing a lot of water from the other end. The animal in question died yesterday and is at the vet getting autopsied. So I should expect they will find something wrong with her kidneys.
