I have searched for an answer on here and given google and utube a good work out. I may be useing the wrong search words but I seem to be getting half answers everywhere.
Is there a reason I cannot just pick up a garden snail from my garden and feed it to a blue tongue lizard
* Excepting the possibility of snail baits or chemical digestion or contamination...is there any other reason why I should not do this?

Any educated Info I can get here would be so welcomed I am chasing my own tail.

Go for it I personally get the snails out of my veggie garden.I try to use the medium size ones because I feel the older snails would be more prone to parasites etc. if you do feed snails from your garden just worm your bluesy more often.

A friend of mine catches snails in his back yard all the time, he told me that he keeps the snails for a week feeding them carrots. The idea being that if they die in that time they've been poisoned and if they live, there clean, that and there full of carrot. hope this helps.

they can have rat lung worm from feeding on rat poo

There is a possibility they could have parasites in them, as well as the possibility of them having poison in their system such as the snail bates or pesticides.

A way to prevent the poison at least is keep them for a few days and feed them on your own greens so that way you know what they have eaten recently.

I have heard about people suffering from the worm that the snail transports but couldn't find how that or if that particular worm infested reptiles. So if I buy store bought snails sold as reptile food and kept them contained for breeding would the colony be worm free?

Some adult snails have been aged at thirty plus years so have fun breeding them, just get your backyard ones there good enough to eat yourself with Tommie's and garlic so they are good for your bluey. They eat them in the wild and they are the first food I offer with rehab blueys

The only real danger is your next door neighbours snail bait....

Grab them chuck them in a bucket with some mulch and veggies if the buggers are alive after two weeks then they go straight into the bluey's enclosure.

that's quite a clever idea

I used to with my Blueys, before I did this though I went to each house on my street and asked if they used baits in their gardens. Though.. my bluetongues were young. and I had to cut the snails into 4 sections. Which is not the most appealing sight to see.

I feed literally hundreds of snails from my veggie patch on a regular basis. So far with no I'll effects. It's not uncommon for me to get a hundred or so in one night after a light afternoon rain.
Sorry there is one side effect. Very fat pink tongues and she- oak skinks.
