Hi guys,

I have two inland bearded dragons and have put them into there new enclosure on the weekend.

And now the smaller of the two is rapidly head bobbing and chasing the larger beardy around and nipping at him. ( not all the time )

They are 1year old and have been living together fine since i got them.

The enclocure is 32deg at one end and 23 - 24deg at the other with a full UV spectrum light as well.

They have never done this before until now.

Is it a heirechly thing now i have put them into there new home.

Please help as i don't want to come home and find one missing a limb or worse of dead

do you know if they are both boys? It could be that the little boy is trying to show dominance to the bigger boy OR the other one is a female and his displaying himself and etc. If they are two males and they are showing this behaviour I would separate them, you don't want them hurting each other, biting toes off and etc.

I second that...it could be one of two things:

1. it could be two males and there could be some fighting soon, so sepeating them a.s.a.p is the way to go
2. it could be a male and female, to which you could expect some mating, and on top of that, possibly expect some eggs.

Good luck either way! (and I hope it's the latter :D)

at 1 year old t heyre too young for eggs to be a good idea, while i'm sure if its a girl she could become gravid, shes not ready physically for it to be a good idea.
egg binding would be the biggest danger, followed by her body using the calcium she needs for growth for egg production instead.

Draggoz - no i don't know if they are female or male ? Am hoping to get Chris to sex them tonight for me

Thanks for the offer as well Chris will call you later tonight.

I keep a close eye on them as well and haven't caught them doing the naughty as i definately don't wna that as they are to young.

They always got on fine living in there plastic tub for the last 6 - 8 mnths.

not a problem,...i should be home from 7.30 onwards,... :)

ye they can do fine for a while and then things change as they grow, especially during this time of year. I had a trio living together and they were fine until one day they started fighting and there is nothing you can do but separate them (unless your breeding of course, but as said they are a bit too young for that yet). Make sure they have equally good basking spots so they don't fight over that and a lot of food... but I would still look at separating them.

your temps need to be adjusted

23* at cool end ....40* at head height under basking light

do the beards blacken the same to full lower lip line ??
or does one or both look like it has a line drawn under the chin

Hi Dragonlady, i will adjust the temps tonight.

I think my biggest problem is at the moment is i got told that i should use a 50watt basking light and have noticed as stated it only gets to approx 32deg.

What size bulb to people recommend for a 4 x 2 x 2 enclosure. It also has a 2ft twin uv tube running a NEC T10 black light and a reptisun 2.0 uv tube and and a 10.0 uv compact as well.

there is nothing wrong with sexing your bearded dragons by yourself. If they are big enough it is really easy to tell just by holding them up and simply looking underneath ;)

LOL I just glanced at this topic and though it said "Fiesta Beardie"

I had this awesome image of a Beardie with a big Mexican moustache, wearing a sombrero and whacking at a pinata, with a bottle of tequila in his hand!!!

Red Eye Girl, look at the article, I was'nt indicating to use Hemipenal eversion, just the usual visual way

As long as they are big enough, otherwise you may get false results

Cheers

I'm going to get Chris1 to sex them for me as i'm a newbie and still learning. I have tried to do the physical look but like i said i'm no expert.

If it was i would say they are both female from looking at that link.

They are only 9mnths old. The biggest called Beafcake is approx 9"long and minnie me is approx 8"long.

Is that going to be big enough to tell ?

Simon

Fair enough Simon, no worries. That size might be just on the fringe, but not %100 sure myself. Others would know more.

It did say on that page that if anything u may get false females, so if u have alook and it looks like its a male, then chances r its a male.

Cheers

should be able to work it out at that size,...its worth a look anyway! :)

Why so many U.Vs & heat lights?

one U.V...a 10. is preferable ......
4x2x2.... 60w spot (hardware store..$4) would give you 38* at head height ....but depending on your locality get a 75w for a back up
there is no need for a thermostat using this wattage

yes plenty big enough, great size for age ....you must be doing well with them:D

Dragonlady, thats what i got recommended to use and i had a twin fluro at work so i just used that.

As for doing well with them i actually thought they where undersize and was always embarresed  to post pictures of them. I will take some photos tonight.

Chris, sorry i didn't call last night i had some family things to take care of.

I will try and call later and arrange another time with you.

Simon
