Hey guys havnt posted for a while so heres one...
on saturday night i convinced my stepdad to take me fishing, lol much to his discust as footy was on .
we decided to try a spot that we have only fished at a few times, but went for it anyway in hope of a barra as i recently lost a barra there. we got there, got setup ect.. and finally i got to wet my line :)...within 40 seconds a was snapped off lol so i rigged up cast and again was snapped off..i put it down to frayed braid and got my other baitcaster from the car that has heavy mono. It had been in the water not touched for ages so i went to reel in and suddenly the line started peeling off, after about 15 mins i had caught my first stingray :) he was a decent size too. then i caught his little brother haha. next i caught a small grunter then a small bream. then again no bites for ages so we decided to pack up and head home..started reeling in and hooked up to a decent fish :) 38cm bream. I was going to let him go but after i got the hook out he had carked it for some reason.

sorry about the pic it was taken from an iphone, and as always the pic dose not do this fish any justice.

Looks like a yellow tail bream to me...What makes you so sure it's a golden grunter all the pics i've seen of them have stripes ??

You're on drugs if you think that is a grunter (which we call ock ocks)! The body shape is all wrong for a start, grunters are banded, their mouths curve slightly upward and their eye is set further back in their head.

These are all i catch when i go fishing.

They are pretty over rated, it's pretty well all we catch in the rivers up here.

How do you fish for them?

Sounds like you're a live baiter. Use about a 60lb leader with a running sinker, use a swivel if you like it doesn't really matter. Use about a 9/0 hook so it sets deep but use a really wirey/thin hook so your live bait can still swim easily and so the hook sets easily. Then when you do hook one keep your rod low to the water, that tends to stop them from jumping.

You try google champ, find any picture of anything in the croaker family that resembles that fish! Or the Grant's Guide or any other good fish guide.

That is a bream. The only fish that any fisho with a decent knowledge of Aussie species could mistake a bream for is a tarwhine.

It is a bream. You are wrong... try google.

Another good tip when using lures on barra is to dump the treble and use a bigger razor sharp single with a good barb
They dont seem to dislodge them as easily then
Although keeping the rod tip down will help stop the jumping the jump is the only good thing about the lacklustre fight they usually put up

If anyone wants the fight of their life try catching a catfish in the Ord on barra gear, outfight a barra twenty times over

OK OK waruikazi calm down big fella don't get upset maybe i should have had a look on a better computer now that i have checked it out on the wife's lap top i will refer to my original statement,,,,, nice fish .sorry to have hijacked you thread chickensnake if you live any where near the ville my son around the same age would gladly take you out in our Hobie kayak to nail a few barra around the rock walls or city lakes....

Ive caught a few barra and my two biggest were both from the rockwalls in Townsville harbour
Live prawn both fish... hook 10 land 2 as they know their way around the snags and wont touch heavy leaders
Every day sunrise sunset you can hear the boof there as they hit bait
magic spot if you cant get away
Alligator creek also used to hold some big fish and easy access in a Kayak

i have only used lures for them so far (but the one i hooked at this spot was on a prawn) and they hardly ever go for it lol, only had them take it a few times. usually they just follow it all the way to the bank so i think i may need to get the technique down hahah. but i will be trying for one tomorrow, got a day off school so im going fishing :p
@ noved thanks for the offer mate but unfortunately im about 10hrs south of you.

I'm not upset, but the young fella who came onto the forum to tell us about his fishing trip and his big fish could be.

You were wrong and you continued to make your claim, what did you expect me to say?

Longqi, now i recon you're on drugs! Catfish?!?! If you want a real fighter try landing a milkfish on barra gear!

What kind of lures do you go for? Barra fishing is pretty well all i do now (unfortunately) let us know what you do and we'll see if we can nut this one out!

I have tried the labelled specific "barra lures" they sorta look like a skinny mullet lol, they are divers. a vast arry of soft plastics(mainly ones that are to resemble medium baitfish), and other hard lures. & poppers of all assortments. also the metal ones with the trebble on the end.
