I'm looking at getting another coastal. The only drama is he will only eat fresh killed mice. I'm not sure where I can get some live mice in Port Macquarie NSW. Havnt seen any at the pet stores. I would consider breeding them, but that wont help in the short term. Does anyone know of a local breeder in my area where I could get some?

Thanks for reading.

hey i might be able to give ya a hand have you tried the petstore at laurieton? or the pet goods direct near harvey norman last time i checked those were the last 2 shops that had live mice

I'd be very surprised if a Coastal couldn't be converted to thawed mice. You may have to wait a few weeks until it's hungry enough, but that won't hurt the snake, and it'll save you a heap of hassles... You just make a rod for your own back by pandering to finicky feeders when 95% of the time it's not necessary.

Don't even offer food for at least a month, then on a warmish night when the snake is clearly hungry, offer a mouse which has been thawed in hot tap water and is still warm.

The one near Harvey Norman has closed down now. Opening under another name, but not sure when. Havnt tried the Laurieton one tho. Thanks for ya help mate.

Just quickly, i don't think pet stores are allowed to sell you live animals as snake food. If they figure out what you plan to use them for they are well within their right to refuse the sale.

Thanks Jamie.
The breeder did advise me that he had tried to convert him, but had no luck with it.
I just don't want to risk getting him and have him not eat for me.

Yeh, that's what I was thinking. Wouldn't take them to long to work out what was happening.
Thanks for that.

They aren't allowed to sell animals for live food purposes. But you don't go in there ranting about wanting a mouse for snakefood. But buying pet mice in Port Macquarie is near impossible now. They said that only snake owners were buying them so they stopped selling them.

I was going to get some from Laurieton yesterday but I put my foot in it when I questioned the price of their frozen adult mice - $6 each. I could hardly ask for a live ones after that...lol....but I need to start my colony again. Buying frozen food up here is impossible and the pet shops are way over the top with their prices. My snakes are getting hungry :(

Where is the current owner getting his mice from? Surely he either knows where to get them or is breeding them himself in which case you could ask if you could buy a few mice off him, keep a few back to breed and feed out a few until your own babies get big enough.
