hi evryone, i know im not the only one that really wants freshies in NSW!!! there is tak about womas dropping to class one soon, and im wondering what people think of the chances of freshies being put on class two? what would need to be done to allow them. others states can have them so why cant we?

should a potition be started? if we could get enough names would national parks consider?
i want this law changed!! does anyone have any idea as to what we can do to get them on a recreational license?

they are native 2 qld but even we cant keep em here legally

yet they arent in vic and they can keep them....whats with that? i think it is a real shame that an animal that is almost an icon should be kept out of the hands of good keepers! if they are put on class two and make it that you need experience with large monitors befor you can get one!

i know, that bugs me, they are not found naturally in vic but they can keep em and we cant:(

There is a section on the paperwork that comes with your licence that says you need to make an application to the Director-General of NPWS with details regarding husbandry etc...

Of course I would imagine this has already been done - numerous times I would think - so I would imagine however action has been taken to apply for Womas to be Class 1 would be the same action required to apply for freshies to be placed on Class 2. Just a guess but I would imagine it would require some sort of petition...

...the problem with that being that if a large number of people signed a petition NPWS may have just as many concerns regarding the number of people who would get Crocs without suitable setups/experience...

...another issue I see is that in order to keep Class 2 reptiles you must have kept Class 1 reptiles of the same type (ie Class 2 Geckos require experience with Class 1 Geckos) - how do you get relevant experience in keeping Crocs...?? It would probably require an additional section added in a similar way to keeping Venomous Snakes...

...and we all know that governments aren't particularly keen to make majo changes to ANY setups they have in place, let alone one of this nature...

Aslan, thats mostly correct but its not true that you are required to actually keep animals similar from class one, eg i know plenty of people whos first monitors where lacys ect, i have my advanced license and can by any class two animal even if for instance i havent kept a class one gecko!

a logical reason may be that if a idiot person who has a croc in vic decides hey i dont want this and releases it into the wild, how long is it gunna last? not very logn in them waters thats for sure.

but in alot of the hotter places in nsw and qld, thats a completely different story.

that is just somethin that crossed my mind about why they may be not aloud there but are in vic.

Really? The paperwork I received with my licence says otherwise...is it just a case of rules being enforced in a different manner than written or I have been given a bum steer by NPWS?..either way I won't be real surprised... ;)

Not sure I would go as far as saying MUST be for a good reason....but it's PROBABLY for a good reason ;)

For instance why can't possums be kept in NSW under licence...?

what happens when somebody starts a petition stating that we should be able to keep exotics? Catch 22 situation. We are not allowed to keep crocs and it must be for a good reason.

Of course it is for a very good reason, keeping crocs long term requires a damn big invest of time, money and other resources, not what most people would objectively consider in that initial emotive state if allowed to purchase and keep crocs.

I think that is definately an issue...for instance if allowed I would love to have croc except for the fact that I know full well that as an adult I could never manage to house it etc...

But what makes NSW different to any other state in regards to spontaneous purchases...?

True but that also applys to most of the larger species of reptiles, In my opinion keeping large monitors and ven's (which both of which i do) is alot more dangerous than Freshwater Crocs.
I aree that the keeping of saltwater crocs should be limited to zoo's and wildlife parks. But as I have said before in VIC you can keep salties but You can't keep Boyds and Mitchells Water Monitors? go figure?
Out of interest does anyone know of people keeping/breeding freshies off license in NSW?

I think you will find the rules have changed. The new class 2 application form clearly spells it out. Class 1 of a particular group of animals for 2 years before class 2.

It's not on their website but if you ask them to send you one it's written on there. However I don't kow how well it is enforced.

i dont get why we cant keep exotics, we are like the only country who dosent purches and collect exotics i reackon we should all have a petion on that

Yeah, looked it up to be sure...under licence criteria it states;

"3. The Class 2 reptile must be from the same taxonomic group or family of reptiles that you have had care and handling experience with (eg if you want to keep Class 2 geckoes you must have kept Class 1 geckoes first)"

Someone start a petition please I want a freshie aswell

no way in hell should a metropolitan herper have a crocodile as a pet in any state, imo
