My motherboard in my computer self destructed on Sunday. It also took out C: drive and maybe my DVD burner as well. All irreplacable data was backed up but it still cost me $200 and most of yesterday. Still have a couple of hours reinstalling software. What a pain.

And no, it wasn't a power surge, I've covered that potential problem.

You BACKED UP YOUR DATA????? What sort of techo ARE you????

you know there are ways to get the data off that hard drive still don't you?
Yep and have done low level data retrival, not pleasant. The HDDs are partitioned so that data is not on C: drive anyhow so the backups weren't required. I only lost the OS and the applications.

Yup, after a few horrible times like this, I partitioned the hard drive and keep a ghosted image of the OS and all applications on the other partition, or better still, another computer, and save all data entry work on the partition. Norton's Ghost has saved me heaps of time many many times when a virus sneaks through. Not pleasant otherwise

RE: Re: RE: Frizzle Fry

nah what i ment is if a hard drive dies i can get the data back, all of it 90% of the time........there is two ways to do it, one way sometimes the drive can be brought back to life, the other way the hard drive is lost forever....

RE: Re: RE: Frizzle Fry

"Stick it in the freezer for an hour or two, connect it up and copy like mad before it dies again" is one way.... sometimes...! ;-)
