Hi everyone,

I recently replaced my Green Tree Frogs previous substrate (Gravel) with some fake grass, but whenever I put some crickets in to feed the seem to be able to squeeze their way underneath the fake grass! What should I change my substrate to?

Thanks,
James

Try Kritter's Crumble, works great.

wouldnt they injest teh critters crumble?

my frog has terrible aim,..when i had him on small gravel he kept getting a mouthful along with his cricket, he'd use his hands to get most of them out, but some still made it thru, so i covered the small pebbles with large pebbles so he wouldnt swallow them, problem there was the crickets hid in the cracks of teh bigger pebbles so he couldnt get them.
after a while i noticed the substrate started to smell mouldy cos he splashed alot in his water bowl, so all that came out, gave him a huge enclosure and put rubber mats in to eiminate teh dampness problem. but the crickets were hiding under the mats, so now i just hand feed him. its kinda cool, he knows im his food source now and splats himself against the glass when hes hungry and wants to get my attention, lol! :p

Nah mine don't because I have a layer of sphagnum moss above it.

GTF's have an inate ability to not swallow something that they shouldn't, like substrate. Often you'll see them making weird shapes with their tongue's trying to spit out a piece of something that wouldn't go down well.

Well I wouldn't really know about that haha, I'm talking about what I use for my Growling Grass Frogs..

I have green tree frogs and pythons and after trying just about all substrates over the years I find the best option is eucalyptus leaves and broken up euc. bark pieces. For frogs, I place a heat cord beneath the leaf litter (which is about 1 inch deep), which keeps it dry inhibiting mould and fungus growth. It makes the vivarium look like a piece of the bush too. Only thing is you may need to feed live invertebrates on forceps or in a separate tub or bucket as upon releasing them they'll run straight under the leaves and remain there.

Just out of curiosity, isn't kritter krumble designed to soak up moisture? Wouldn't this be bad for a frogs skin?

I use crushed granite,
U all have to remember most frogs don't like being constantly moist or wet all the time and u should use the substrate that will be easy to clean and won't grow molds and cause diseases. Fake grass is also great and is easy to remove and clean!

Doesn't the granite become a bit uncomfortable and cold for them?

No the granite is heated via a exo terra large heat wave under the tank and it is not the whole substrate for the tank, it also has a pond and waterfall as well as sandstone boulders which are also warm same as the stones.....

Sorry
Forgot to add they don't usually sit on the granite substrate as they are ither on the sandstone rocks or on the magnetic ledge or simply chilling out in the pond...
