Hey guys and girls, so my gf decided she wants to get a gecko after seeing pictures from the site. she keeps asking me, whats that one? whats this? ohhhh that looks cute whats that? and i keep saying i dont know. =S. so need a couple of questions answered if you don't mind.
1. I wanna narrow down my search so she's looking for a "cute" gecko
2. What does it eat and heating and husbandry
3. Price of the gecko and the price of the whole enclosure
Would help me heaps if I could have some answers to those questions. Thanks!

Nick.

Well.. that depends what she classes as cute? All geckos i find cute with there bug eyes and little noises and such. But thick-taileds are a decent size, they can be handled, you can pick them up for 80 bucks, use a storage tub that costs like 10 bucks to house them in and use sand for substrate, or cocopeat. They eat crickets, dust them with calcium powder, and im in bris and dont even heat mine.. its bloody hot enough as it is here i think id kill them if i put them in the snake room.

Common knob tails are pretty cool so are thick tailed geckos knob tails go for $150 up & thick tails $100 up. I feed mine crickets & woodies that are Dusted in Vit & cal powder & give them water via misting with a spray bottle. These guys dont climb glass so housing can be a small fish tank 15in up is good with a sand substrate for knob tails & coco peat for thick tails with a small heat mat underneath

ahhh okay that sounds easy enough. these thick tailed geckos, can they be heated with a heat mat when it gets colder or is a heat lamp required? a couple of hides and a water bowl? and what kind of calcium powder? and she likes the ones with stubby fat tails and big eyes. lol thats what she said. thanks heaps! =)

There are some pics on my profile if you want to check them out
i thought they'd need more stuff to survive. so you dust a live cricket with the powder and chuck it in the enclosure? they just eat one a day? or is it more like snake routine 5-7 days etc. lol

I have marbled velvets and they eat a few crickets every day. Some days the crickets survive a little longer, but on average I throw in a few crickets a day per gecko. I'm not sure how much the thick tails require.

We have 2 knob tailed geckos.. they are only a few weeks old and so far have proven VERY easy to look after.

They are very funny to watch at night. We feed them a couple of crickets (pinheads at the moment dusted with calcium) every couple of days.

We try not to handle them at all unless we need to as they can be a bit skittish. At the moment have them in a sort of half fishtank with a few different hides and a heat mat in one corner and we spray the tank once or twice a day and they just lick the water off it and themselves.

Not sure on the cost.. I think usually around $150 for these but these babies were bred by my brother so we got them given to us :)

Thank you! i pmed your brother already and yeah just waiting for his reply. really interested in getting these cute geckos =P.

i keep marbled geckos
round $40-$50 really cute
nice colours
feed them crickets
make sure the tank has alot of hiding placees as they hide alot
room temprature will be fine
enclosure wont cost that much but make sure its completely escape proof as they are really fast and squeeze through holes big enough
they are fast so watch it if your cleanin out the enclosure
they are nocturnal and really good climbers
mist the enclosure every 2-3 days

my enclosure is a little bit advanced for them lol as i have heating and a heat rock but thats not really needed

heres some pics of my tanks ( the wooden and lit up one ) and the other is my breeding one ( basic )

hope this helps :)

Nick

well i think they're cute but my gf wouldn't think so. she likes the big eyes and short tails lol. so she wants a levis or something similar. is the care similar between these two?

oh ok im not sure as ive never kept thick taileds

but id say it be different coz they are terrostrial ( spelling ) geckos, they dont climb glass and stuff, they like sand and a deserty theme

Mine attempt to climb but basically run on the spot on the glass!

We have a fly screen sort of lid on top of ours mainly to stop our dog from getting too nosey. My brother has no lid on the parents tank though!

oh okay so thick taileds are terrestrial? so does that mean they dont need heat lamps?
