I want to setup a little nesting box for my fat tailed gex, would a small (8cm diameter) plastic container be ok with a hole cut in the roof or side? What should it be filled with?
Sounds fine - fill it with coir peat - 'Brunnings' brand is the best. I bought mine from K-Mart but you can get it at Bunnings, garden centres etc. Also make sure you don't grab the one with the fertilizer in by mistake...
I'm yet to have any of my species lay in nesting boxes.
I've just left them to lay in their substrate. Would be good to hear how you go with it though Hornet.
some will, some won't. Amyae like to dig extensive tunnels to lay their eggs, box patterened's will lay them anywhwere, I have some levis that always lay in the box provided and one that just refuses, northern vellies i have always lay in the boxes.
