There's alot of information about this all over the site, but alot of it is conflicting information.

Is my understanding of the following correct?

NORMAL x NORMAL = 100% NORMAL


ALBINO x NORMAL = 100% HET FOR ALBINO


ALBINO x HET = 50% ALBINO, 50% HET FOR ALBINO

HET x HET = 25% ALBINO, 50% HET FOR ALBINO, 25% NORMAL

ALBINO x ALBINO = 100% ALBINO

It's easy, just do a punnet square with:

AA = normal
Aa = het
aa = albino

It makes much more sense when you look at it that way (and is easier to remember).
 
Going by the articles written by the doc, that's how i believe it works.

Probably worth defining that the normal looking animals from a Het X Het breeding have a 66% chance of being hets. Thats based on the fact that on average 3/4 will be normal looking but only 2/4 will be hets, 2/3 = 66%

Yeah, they would be the 50% het for albino animals.

HET x HET = 25% ALBINO, 50% HET FOR ALBINO, 25% NORMAL
 
Noooo punnet squares are not confusing at all! :p

I can never remember the ratio, so when I'm trying to figure it out I just get a piece of paper and scribble down a punnet square.

Correctomundo JungleRob!!The pain in the but is when for example you put het x het you get 25% albinos but then the rest all look normal so you then get the unknowns until proven meaning the possible hets which are the remaining percentage of a het x het breeding which produces basicaly 75% possible hets as other than the albinos produced from the het x het breeding the rest all look normal so you really have no way of knowing which are definite hets or not until they are bred which can lead to things getting very confusing...

Question,how much would people think possible hets should be worth and should there be a difference between male or female possible hets in price just out of curiosity??

Assuming your referring to Darwins Browns.

The distinct trend from the get go was for female possible hets to be priced higher than males.
That said, i think this was heavily influenced by the fact very few female albinos were sold.... etc.
Maybe things have leveled out. now.. though?

IMO, not much more than a pair of normals. Too much of a gamble if you were paying a higher price. I would rather pay a higher price and get gauranteed hets than take the risk on possible hets.
 
Yeah agreed Hugsta i don't think they should be too much more than normals however if you bought a few say 5 you'd have a good chance of getting a pair of hets which would still be a reasonably cheap way of getting albinos.It is a bit of a gamble but you could get very lucky or get very unlucky so the more you purchase the more chances of getting a pair of hets also depends if you get them from the same or different clutch??

Yep Australis definitely referring to Darwins.

What is the average clutch size of Darwins,around 20??

Yeah, for sure. I won't be breeding het x het for that exact reason.

I agree with Hugsta too, it is a gamble and possible hets should be priced alot lower than definite hets.

On a side note, punnett squares also show that for humans, when reproducing, the chances of getting a girl are 50%



Although, those sperm/egg diagrams are incorrect. Each reproductive cell contains both set of chromosomes.
