A 10-year-old girl mauled by a crocodile in Western Australia's remote Kimberley region will today be airlifted to hospital in Derby after spending the night in the care of a doctor at a wilderness lodge.
The girl, named as Chantal Burnup, was swimming off a charter vessel in Doubtful Bay, 240km east of Derby, when the crocodile grabbed her by the chest about 1pm yesterday.
She has puncture wounds and lacerations to her arms, chest and back but police said her injuries were not life threatening.
Chantal had been spending the day with her father, brother and another person on the boat Hard Yakka when she was attacked.
The girl's father reportedly pulled her free as her brother struck the reptile with a nearby object.
She was flown by mustering helicopter to Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge where she remained overnight.
"We really don't know an awful lot about it but there was a helicopter here about to leave with the ag (agriculture) department and they were diverted to pick her up and brought her back here," Annabelle Abbotts, of Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge, said today.
"Dr Anthea Henwood from Fitzroy Helicopters flew up to look after her and stabilise her and then stayed the night with her to make sure she was stable and comfortable.
"She is coordinating getting her out of here this morning."
Chantal's mother is travelling from the family's home in West Busselton, 230km south of Perth, to Derby hospital, 2,400km north of Perth, to see her daughter.
"She's hurt and she's very scared but she has her brother with her," Gabrielle Burnup, the girl's mother, was quoted by The West Australian newspaper as saying.
The girl's father had been left on the charter boat, Ms Abbotts said.
