Hey all!

I'm starting to research on keeping gtf!!! and was wondering if some people that know or keep gtfs can confirm these things for me.

So firstly housing, i was going to fill about 15-20 cms of water on the bottom of a fish tank i own and add large black river pebbles so the entire bottom of the tank is not under water, and use a water heater with a Uv globe on top. Is this sufficient enough? will the water heater heat the tank enough? and what temperature should the water be?

And secondly feeding, will frogs happily eat crickets alone or do they need a mix? and if i was going to only have 2 gtf should i breed my own crickets?

TYVM for any help

when it comes to gtf i find that they love our water tank, bbq, toilet, back sliding door ,underneath our fridge, sometimes even our bed ...........i dont ever have to keep them in a setup as they are in abundance here.........but keeping the gtf in a set up isnt that hard and you will find out all you need on a care sheet ....just search it and all your questions will be answered.

That sounds o.k my only concern would be when it came to feeding you may find a lot of crickets end up in the water, you could feed out side the Vivarium or try and tweezer feed.

The maximum you should set the water heater is 26 degrees, but in summer you can turn it down to 24 degrees and sometimes depending how hot your house gets you may need to turn it off. Depending on your house temperature you may not need the water heater at all.
It is best to set up the Vivarium with a thermometer, running the lights as you would if it had frogs in and monitor the temperatures for a week or so.

For two adult frogs you would be feeding approximately 2-3 crickets each 2-3 nights a week so I wouldn't think it was worth breading them. Cockroaches are a lot easier to breed so may be worth it.

Here is a good care sheet:

There is no real need to heat them unless you live in areas that has alot of sub 0 temps or max temps of under 20. I keep GTF's outdoors in Sydney and some are still eating during winter nights, I also have no standing water with them at all. In a tank, all you need is a water bowl, it is much easier to keep clean. Sometimes with messy herps such as frogs, it is better to keep the enclosure simple. If you want a natural type look with live plants ect and a flooded floor, it is best in a four foot tank with an underground filter. I kept GTF's without UV for the best part of 20 years, as their eagerness to eat makes it rare for them to have any bone problems if fed well during growth, though feel free to use one if you wish.

Thanks for the info, yea i get alot of cold nights and winter days where im at, hasn't been over 20 for past 5 days i would say haha! So yea.

Thanks i will keep researching!!

periods over winter don't matter, frogs will brumate like reptiles, as long as day temps in spring / summer get over 25 and winter temps don't go under 10 for too long. GTF will eat at 18 deg or over.
