my 7 month old bredli is a great handler but ive kind of gotten over the initial urge to hold her every couple of days. she became quite restless when handling recently so i dont anymore. i find shes much happier.

my question is that will she continue to have her tame nature if i only handle her when needed. will a tame hatchy hold her personality as she becomes older.

im sure it probably depends on the snake but id like peoples opinion.

thanks.

Hey,
I am having some trouble with my 7 month old Bredli trying to get him to let me handle him, I only take him out once every three days to try to let him get used to me but he is still quite nervous and strikes at anything that moves when he is out. Any advise on how to get him to calm down?

Hey there bud.

you loose the urge to handle but especially when there younge keep handeling her cause they can and will loose that tameness. my best mate has a pair of adult olives and he stopped handling then at about 9 months o age except when needed and now he cant pick them up or go past the enclosure with out them rearing up striking at him so he now has to use gloves and hooks to get them out.

i know after a while you do get bored of handling them but just while your watcvhing tv or just sitting down hold it and let it slide threw your hands but depending on the snake is wheather it will loose the tamness but as a pre caution i hold all my snakes every few days especially while there young and if dont do it my little seven year old sister does so that i know that they arnt going to be an angry snake either way.

cheers

I just got a childrens python from a commercial breeder, he never has been handled before and when i got him he would run around his cage like mad and strike at me all the time but never actuall tag me, same thing when he was out the cage he would strike this way and that way.

All did was hold him every couple of days for a couple mins at a time and then put him back, i gradually increased the handling time slowly and now he is brilliant. Just takes a little time.

Handling techniques..

If you dont already have a hook, get one, best ever thing to have.. My 7 month bredli, is great at handling, sometimes he will get a bit upset, if so, grab the hook for stand by..
I've handled my boy monty every day since I got him, leaving him a day or so in between feeds, and he gets used to it..

He has nipped me a few times when I first got him, but he calms down after a while, been handled everyday..

Make sure you keep going though, the more you react to the attitude the more they are going to do it.. Just keep going, after all you do have a python.. hehee.

okay then. will im gonna get her out today.
i think ive gone off the handling as she has been very aggressive during feeding. she will ignore her food and just bite me and i have to leave the room so she eats.

however she is still extremely docile when its not feeding. im just still pretty edgy.

btw, ive used a hook and she hates it. ill hook her up and she will slither off it straight away. i have to use my hands and she doesnt try to get away so fast. the hook just seems to freak her out.

just took her out for some sun. she was super docile. i find after each sign of a aggression it takes me a while to handle her again. learnings learning, thanks guys.
