so i just bought a lovely jungle python hatchling, and its three weeks old and hasn't eaten, but he shed last night. Is now a good time to try feeding him? I tried feeding him about 3 days ago, He knew it was food as he was very intently watching it and smelling/tasting it. So i left it in his cage but he didn't eat it after 24 hours so i took it out. If it is a good time to do it... got any tips for a rookie?

Why did you buy an animal that isn't feeding? I suggest you get in touch with the breeder and ask him how to get it going.

nobody said it wasn't feeding, its still early days, hes shedding fine, he weighs a lovley 32 grams, hes great, and im sure in time he will feed. to answer your question, because i have no doubt he will feed, why wait around for the breeder to feed him?

At 3 weeks old it is by no means established with regard to feeding.Regardless the breeder is in the best position to help you get it feeding.

Rookie, you seem to be very confident, yet you're asking for advice. Give it a go every 3-4 days.

Because the breeder should know the tricks to get him feeding. I can see your next thread already: " Help my Jungle hasnt eaten in 8 weeks, what do I do? " followed by " I'm pretty sure I have been ripped off and sold a non feeding snake".

There is a massive difference between getting an established feeder and getting a snake that isnt established.

Anyway, Good Luck to you and I hope it all goes smoothly for you and your new friend.

Asking for tips on how to help him feed isn't really, pleading for somebody to tell me why he isn't feeding.. i just thought that it would be a good idea to get some good advice from other experienced harpers but i guess there's not much here...

Try feeding at night, with a warm prey item (still hot from the defrosting water). You may have to use something sharp to put a small hole in the skull through to the brains. Hold it in front of your snake on a pair of tweezers and jiggle it around a bit. Mice are sometimes better received than rats. Don't try it every night, or you may stress it, leave it for a couple of days. Some animals feel better about eating if they are under their hide sheltering as they are more secure.

There are endless other tricks you can use but that basic info may help.

Why buy a non-feeding snake if ur not confident-experienced in getting it to eat.It beats me WHY some ppl will even sell a non-feeding reptile to anyone, unless you have experience etc.But as others have suggested, get in contact with the seller..With any hatchies at night is best to feed, also make sure the food item pinky rat-weaner mouse is warm.If it doesnt take it within 5-10mins leave alone again for aweek then try again..

Someone is asking for the most basic of advice here, with the amount of effort that most people have put into raining on them they could have just as easily typed the 4 lines it took to give them that basic advice. The first 4 snakes I ever bought were non-feeding hatchlings, I grew them up to breed them all without a hitch. Sometimes you get a tricky one. Often, life just ain't that hard...

If you continue to have problems do a quick search on the net, and contact the seller.

Cheers.
