I was wondering if someone would be able to help me with some heating issues for my spotteds tank.
The tank is about 90cmx60cmx60cm ish.
I have a heat mat under it at the moment, which does ok during the winter, but i have it in my head that a heat lamp will just be a lot better, and want to get it sorted before winter starts.
Could someone possibly tell me what will be needed to get it set up (ie what bulbs are best, what sockets, leads etc) and a ball park figure on price.
I already have the heat mat running through a thermostat which just switches the power on/off (apparently there are other types???) so i dont need that one.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

hi coops,

if you're running a lamp and mat at the same time you'll need another thermostat.
the best is a dimming thermostat rather than the on/off, isn't as noisy and saves the life of the globe.

i have the same size tank with a spotted, i have a globe guard with ceramic fitting, and running a 100w basking globe at the hot end.

looking around $18 for the globes, $90-$100 for the guard (incl light fitting)
i recently got a new dimming thermostat from victoria for $140 delivered to gold coast, apparantly its better than the microclimate one i had previously that lasted 2 years.

i have spotteds and they all have the same setup , ceramic heat emitter - ceramic light socket - cage - on/off thermostat . nothing fancy but it duz the job and didnt cost $$$ to setup . iam yet to blow a ceramic heat emitter by using an on/off thermostat .
rough price : ceramic heat emitter $40 , ceramic light socket and cage $50 , on/off thermostat $60 .

As zoojas as quoted Ceramic heat emitter 40$ Ceramic light socket and cage 50$ And i highly recommend a dimming thermostart which you can purchase from herptrader for $125

This is going to make me sound pretty stupid, but the ceramic heat emmitter is the bulb right?

ceramic is a heating element, bulb is a light. both produce heat.
ceramics are 'meant' to last longer than globes.

Ahhh, that makes things a bit easier!!
From what I gather, it would probably be better to run a ceramic, so that it can run on and off over 24hr period without the light disturbing the snakes day night cycle??
And what is a dimming thermostat as opposed to a normal one? Does it just gradually heat up and cool down the tank?
Sorry for my stupid questions but just don't want to look too amateurish when I go into the shop, and end up walking out with an extra armful of stuff that I don’t really need!

Yes a dimming thermostat will "dim the lights" etc to keep the temp instead of just turning them on and off..;)

I have been getting my cage set up and running.

Its using a red Globe that a mate gave me, Proper reptile globe, not a regular one.

On/Off Thermostat which sees it turning the light on at about 28-29C and it turning the light off at about 33-34C

Is that cool or should my temps be Higher/Lower.

The temp probe is not right under the light but about 1/4 the way doen the back wall of the cage from the globe.

A thermo in the cool end reads approx 27C

Heat emitter $40.00 ???

It's all here:
Untitled Document

That's what I was advised to do for my Woma, which is also a desert python from same region of a Spotteds and Stimmsons etc.

My thermostat cost me $20, single ceramic light holder is $10 (all from ebay)! - Most expensive I found was $14-$16 for a bulb (at local pet shop), and that's it, really!

Even pet shops will tell you that desert type pythons do not need UVB stuff, it's more skinks, geckos etc....

Good luck.

P.S. Here's Dr. Simon's other articles of great interest:

P.S.2 If it's good for his 500+ Womas and 1500 other pythons, it's good for mine too!:D
