All the talk about temperatures lately has got me thinking about 24 hour heating..
At the moment i have all my reptiles on 24 hour heating, but i am considering for the established eaters doing a trial with no night heating during summer.
What is everyones thoughts on this?
Who does anything similar?
Thanks

My thermostat packed it in and someone told me not to worry about replacing it. They said I could not heat at all this time of year or if I wanted just a couple hours through the day, which is what I`m doing. I have a 9 month old diamond and she seems to be going alright although I don`t think she`s quite as active as she was before the thermo stopped working. I`m thinking of going back to a thermostat to give a constant temp.

The diamond wouldnt mind the cooler temps anyway.
I am considering turning the heating of for 2 spotteds in click clacks ( As they can over heat easily).
An i was also considering for my bredli. But he has a nice cool end ( which he is currently in) so he can cool easy.

Thinking of running the heat on a timer with my UV so she only gets heat for that 3-4 hrs so she can bask (thats what I`m doing now) but controlling that heat with a thermostat so it doesn`t get too hot on these really hot days we`ve been getting. The rest of the time it will be ambient temp.

This one has come up before...I took advice on a similar thread from some well known established breeders and I turn my heating/lights off at 22:30 and back on at 06:00. (I dont know about hatchlings but yearlings upwards should be o.k)

The only negative I see to this is dont go near them (snakes) until the temp is back up as they seem to be a little more cranky but once the temps are back up to normal they seem fine.

The story about diamonds in the latest Reptiles Australia has made me rethink how I heat mine.

I have timers turning heating/lights off at 8pm anyway, sun goes down, so I make the enclosures the same. Sun comes up again and so do my lights/heating at about 6.30-7am at the moment.

On any day I know it's going to be stinking hot I turn the snakes heating off all together, just to be safe. The beardies love it though, so I don't bother about them.

Click-clacks have lousy insulation, so I'd tend to give night heat. You really must have a thermostat with the probe right where the snake sits to control these. With my older snakes, I have Habistat Day/Night thermostats which drop the temperature, but only about 5 - 10 degrees. There are several very successful big breeders who do not use night heat, but I'm too worried about they getting really cold in winter. I feed during the winter, so keep temps reasonable at night.
