hi,
this is my first winter with my O.lesueurii and iv just got a few quick cooling questions :)

firstly, how does this sound to everyone?
from 1april to 1 may i feed 1/2 their normal amount and drop 3 degrees (from 30 to 24) over that time
from 1 may to 1 june drop another 3 degrees (from 24 to 18) and stop all feeding

then from july 1 to september 1 do the reverse of my cooling plan

anyone got any extra info or tips? would really appreciate it.

thanks heaps,
sam

O. lesueurii are pretty easy due to their tolerance of cooler temps, give them the same day temps as summer, just less time of it, say 5 hours instead 8. No heating at night, feed them as much as they can eat twice a week.

no heating at night? where i am it can get to about 6 degrees at night. is that too low?
and feeding them twice a week as much as they eat for the whole time? cant they not digest it properly if its cool? or is that why you leave day temp the same?
thanks heaps jason & anyone else the helps,
sam

yeah, as long as they have ample heat during the day they will be fine, but they need some hours of high temps, delete the heating slowly, over a couple of months. For instance, there a hundred of O. lesueurii right on the open cliff faces around Sydney, under rocks not far from the ocean water line, it gets mighty cold on a winters night on the ocean front, though winter days there get full sun and still quite hot between say 11 - 2. They will have no problems digesting if they get good temps, they will lower their intake themselves to suit the diminishing temps.

saying that, you could just keep them hot all through winter, feed them bucket loads and it won't effect their breeding, you can't stop them from breeding.

alright thanks heaps jason
ill let you know how i go if u want :)

great thread guys,
I am in the same boat - my first winter with my Lesueurs, so thanks for the question, and more so - thanks for the answers. Mine live in the lounge room and I am planning to just turn the heat pad off. We don't let ourselves get cold so they won't see much below 22-23 C while we are up, then maybe 10-11 overnite. One of the benefits of choosing a local species, even if they did have to fly down from sunny QLD to get here!

forgot to ask
when do i resume normal temp and feeding?
after 2 months? 3 months?
thanks,
sam

Leseurri in the Girraween region are exposed potentially to temps as low as -3 C. With mine. its lights off in April, back on in September (no heat day or night). They are only fed if they are out and active which means maybe 1-2 feeds in this period.
