So im thinkingof rescueing a 4 year old childrens python. Not that you can tell it is 4 years old. Its probably not even 60cm in length and its about as round as my finger, and I have small hands. :/it hasnt been handle much and obviously not been fed well. Does anyone have any tips for me to try and get it to be a happy little snake as quickly as possible that will handle and feed well :)

What is it with people posting urgent titles for basic, searchable questions?

Bit harsh for a first time poster who may have never even used a forum before. And where was the word urgent used?

So much hate amongst the kids these days.....

thats sweet of you :) well, i dont think it will grow much longer (if at all) but im sure you could fatten it up by feeding it properly.
good luck with it :) most people here will help you, dont be affraid to keep asking questions :)

Clearly im gonna feed it, im not a retard. I read a few other threads but its always good to get heaps of opions. Also ive never had to look after a childrens python, esspecially one that will be uphappy. So I didnt wanna do anything wrong etc.

I agree - ask away, there are many many threads for similar things, but if you don't feel your problem/question is solved/answered 100% then it's always a good idea to ask your own question :) only way we'll learn!

When you say you're "rescuing it" where abouts is it coming from?

Steady, regular feeds; not too big, not too often. Handle it regularly but again, not too often. If you've got hands about the same size as mine (I'm not too big either lol) I'd say probably a fuzzy mouse two-three times a fortnight and handling probably twice a week; not too long on the handle sessions either, just long enough until it starts to relax and then leave it for a bit. Plenty of heat, and a nice dark hide. There's some probiotic for snakes we've used before, it was developed in South Australia and we used it for a coastal we rescued; he was refusing every feed and was about half the size he should be, it took some time but once it caught on he was eating like a champion, and last we heard still is in his happy new home. Let me do some fossicking to find out the name of it and whether or not it's available, I'll get back to you on it if you like :)

Thanks so much for your help Nighthawk :)Ill see how it goes when I get it and get back to you if its not doing well after a while and I think the probiotic might work :)And it is coming from my boyfriends friend, I said recusing cause I really dont think a snake should be living in something that small and be that size when its 4 years old lol. Poor thing looked all depressed and angry curled up in the corner of his tank. Im such a sook :p I felt so sorry for it lol.

Good on 'ya Bree, best of luck.

bree it might be that its always been a bad eater hence the small size of the animal ... they do tend to curl up to sleep .... make sure its being kept warm enough to want to eat .... but if its 4 years old now and its growth is stunted as bad as you may think it is i doubt getting it feeding well will get it growing much now ... and if it is undersized it really has
no need for a huge enclosure .... they feel more secure in a smaller confined space ,... but in having said that i haven't seen the size of the snakey or its tub ... :)

I have an adult male childreni about 500mm long and as fat as a finger , perfectly healthy and eats fine , he sired a clutch last year and has been breeding away with a few this year ...
So it may not need rescuing at all , a small cage for a small snake is perfectly fine too .... as for making it handle well , why does it need to do so ? It is most likely very happy not being handled...

Agree100%

I have an adult pair thats only 600mm in length.
Its a bit unfortunate that people think there is one "size" that fits a particular breed of snake, They ALL vary within reason!

I didnt realise they could be so small and still healthy, thats why I asked cause I really had no idea lol :). But I do know its not being fed properly as he has told me he doesnt feed it often and when he does its, only crickets. Theres also nowhere for it to hid and I dont think it has enough warmth either. But maybe 'rescueing' was the wrong word to use.

Crickets? You sure the owner didn't say hoppers and you got the word mixed up?

can we get a pic of the snake? because childrens pythons dont eat crickets

I dont have a picture sorry, I havent really talked to him much about it but I think him or his mum said said crickets. I must admit I wasnt 100% sober when this conversation was happening :p I will talk to him more about it tonight lol

Wait... what? As others have said though small tank size isn't too much of an issue as they're not large anyway and can get a little overwhelmed in a large space, we keep ours in a tub system and they're healthy and (to what we can surmise based on inquisitive, less than snappy behaviour...) happy.
That probiotic is called Nutribac, contact Sonia Dewdney through this site:

if you want to get some. It helped out a few of our problem feeders, and we use it each time we feed.
