The thermostat I use for my coastal's heating has just decided to stop working. It was a dimmer, used on a basking spot globe.
My problem is that it will be a good few days before I can replace it.
I have been monitoring the temperatures and the snake's basking area has gone up to 37.5 degrees Celsius. Her enclosure is large and she still had a good thermogradient, ranging from as said to 26.
How detrimental will this be to the snake's short term health?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Danny

Can you change the globe to a lower wattage for a few days? As long as the temp in the cool end drops down to the mid twenties, that will give her access to a cooler area should the other end be too warm.

Possibly get a timer from supermarket on and off to keep the vens a little lower

You're not wrong about the temperatures here in Scotland, it's starting to get properly cold.

The temps are actually 37 - 24.

If I change the globe to a lower watt, the temps in the cool areas will probably go down to 15 -17.

What's best?

It's actually running on a timer. The problem is that without any heat, it'll get too cold. My flat is an old building, built with just one layer of stone. It does not keep the heat!!

Maybe buy him a blanket? Lol sorry had to say that... can it stay on for hour and then off for 15 min is in to the hardware store get a 40 watt globe?

cool is best over a short period as high heat will kill a reptile in minutes, cold ( not freezing)will just slow them down.

So even with areas in her enclosure at 24 degrees C, it's still better to reduce the wattage of globe?

Its hard to say without seeing the design of the enclosure ect, but im just saying its always better to keep it a bit cooler than hotter when your not sure, if the majority of her enclosure is 24 than that would be fine, but if the majority is over 35 then animals can become stressed and agitated and then normal function goes out the window and even if a back corner is a lower temp the reptile will pace up and down trying to escape and may well cook itself.

Thanks Jason,
Her enclosure is big and the majority is around 26 with 24 being the lowest. The high temperature is only directly under her light.
